After much heart searching I have decided to have Thistle spayed and have booked her in at the vets tomorrow. I feel awful and am dreading it. Thistle is 13 months old and had her first season at the beginning of May. Anyway I wonder if you can tell me what I should expect for the next few days/weeks.
Many thanks
Jane

I would expect her to drop all her coat in a full moult within about six weeks of the spay. Depending on her breed you will expect the coat to change in texture. In my breed fortunately the differences in coat are not pronounced, but in my experience the undercoat becomes somewhat lintier in feel. In some breeds the coat changes can be quite pronounced, usually resulting in more undercoat, and in silky coated breeds the top haoir may become curly and/or coarse, and in breeds like Spaniles more difficult to groom.

In medium to large breeds, especially if they become overweight there is an increased likelihood of Urinary incontinence, due to the absence of hormones, that keep the bladder sphincter toned! Bitches can also become somewhat more dominant.

Jane, for what it is worth I think you are doing the right thing for her.

All bitches recover from the spaying operation at different rates. Some bounce back instantly and some take a little while longer. You will have to keep her calm and not let her run around like a loony for a little while until she heals, but in the long run she will be fine :-) Let us know how she gets on.

Leigh, it's worth alot to know you think I'm doing the right thing for her. I'm not bothered about her coat or anything cos she's not going to be shown, but I've been doing obedience with her and she's so good that the dog training class have asked me if I'll join in a little local exhibition of what we do on Sept 7th so I hope she'll be fit by then.
Thanks for all your replies, I find them a great comfort. Ever since her last season I have been worried that she could have accidently got pregnant, although we kept a really close eye on her. I also have 2 teenage daughters so I am really paranoid :-)

I found with my last bitch spay she was miserable for about 6 weeks but once that period was over she's gone back to being a puppy. She's almost 7 and was spayed when her puppies were 14wks old, a change in behaviour was expected due to her litter.

Coat wise she has the best coat ever but seems to have gained weight something which was almost impossible to do before the spay, she is a far happier bitch now and spends most of her days playing with her 'pack' which at present consists of 2 daughters, 2 boxer x's of 17wks, her last husband, a pomeranian and 2 very tiny kittens.

Thistle,
She'll do fine. She'll be woozy and possibly lethargic when you bring her home in the afternoon. That will wear off just depending on her. Sometimes around 8pm, maybe even later.
If she needs to piddle, just make certain you can steady her by the hips in case she stumbles a bit :-) If she wants to drink water, let her. Mine always liked me nearby so they could see me. Try to avoid letting her jump off of the sofa/bed for a couple of days (yeah, I know, "Hah") :-) She'll be right as rain within a week and not really bothered by it too much.
good luck to you both
toodles cool

Hi Jane

I never noticed any difference at all in my bitch after I had her spayed. She was up on her feet within hours and eating/drinking perfectly normally. I just kept her quiet and indoors for a day or two - letting her out into the garden to go to the loo then business as normal.
I noticed no difference in her temperament/coat or any weight gain.
What I did notice was how much easier it was when she never had a season.

I think a lot depends on the breed. I am quite happy to spay my bitches once their breeding lives are over. I have two of each. :D

Jane

When I had Mars and Min done at the same time it was like emergency ward ten for a day or so until I realised that the monsters were playing on the one to one attention !:D

They were joking apart fine after the first day. Just made sure they were kept quiet and also kept an eye on the wounds to make sure that there was no infection. They were back to their normal happy selves before long !

It is was the right thing to do to get Thistle spayed. She will be fine !

Hi, If you want to give her recovery a kick start you could try using homeopathic medicine. Give Arnicax6 (for shock and bruising) and Hypericumx6 ( for lacerated wounds) , one tablet of each crushed together between two teaspoons, on her tongue 3 times a day , the first dose just before you leave for the vets on the day of the op and for 5 days after the op. On day 6 give her Calendulax6 3 times a day, again crushed, for 5 days and she will heal/recover much more quickly than dogs who are not given them - IMO. They can be given alongside any medicines ( antibiotics/painkillers etc) that the vet gives and are totally safe.

Our rottie was fine when she was spayed, groggy first night and then back to normal next day, vet sent her home with antibiotics and pain killers, but she has never seemed any different since, no problems with weight ( but i always keep an eye on it as rotties tend to put weight on quite easily) and she is still as silly as ever three years on

Good luck Lorraine
