My little Italian Greyhound puppy, Alice, is spending the night at the vets, after getting a lamb rib bone stuck at the 'exit'.
I have fed my dogs chicken wings for about the past 4 years, with occasional lamb ribs/ breast of lamb, oxtail, etc, with no problems.
They all had lamb ribs yesterday, and I gave Alice one which I thought just had the rubbery gristle in it, without bones, as she is greedy and tends to swallow whole. Well, she swallowed a large piece of meat, and cried as it went down, but seemed OK.
When I got home from work, she went out for a poo, but after much straining, crying and biting at her rear end, she couldn't go. Every time I tried to lift her tail to have a look, she would scream and try to bite me. I knew something was very wrong, so we went straight to the vets. By the time we were seen, she had vomited on the floor and was looking very poorly.
As she was already getting dehydrated, and was in a lot of pain, the vet decided to keep her in overnight and do an enema, hoping she would pass whatever was blocking her up, and put her on a drip if she did not improve.
Anyway, I was very relieved to get a phone call from the vet to say that she had passed a piece of bone 1/2 cm x 3 cm long, and very sharp at one end......just like a lamb rib in fact!
Apparently she brightened up as soon as she had got rid of it (wouldn't we all!) but they are keeping her in to see if there is any more.
Must admit I am a bit wary of giving her bones now, even though she has never had a problem with chicken bones before, and the others were all ok after their lamb ribs.
Does anyone else feeding BARF give lamb bones to their dogs?
Liz

I suppose a tiny dog would be at more risk, as a bone that size in an average dog, though uncomfortable, would have got passed with out such trouble.
Glad she is better.
I have had one of mine in a right tiz over grass that won't pass all the way out!
