Gee, thanks Pam for putting me on the spot like that (heavy on the sarcasm)
:D :D :D :D When I live in the US, I subscribe to AAA (American Automobile Association). It's similar to AA in the UK. I know that AAA does have a recipricle agreement with ADAC, the German auto club, so it might also do the same with AA. You might like to check with AA to see if there are any specials running through the time period you want to do. Package deals could be better in the long run just due to less paperwork and knowing the costs up front.
I know that NYC is still trying to build up its tourism industry in the wake of 11 Sept. + the bust of the economy bubble. So you should be able to find some really good package sales. I just don't know any specifics, sorry. I always stay with my in-laws in southern New Jersey, so no one in the family knows anything about accomodations. Sorry.
Here are some websites that might help you out.
NYC Official Tourist site Visitor's Consumer Tips worldwide lodging guide -- there's even a link from here for bidding on accomodations
Search 4 travel aids lots of travel related links....very helpful.
good luck Fiona.
