Further to my recent post I would like to thank everyone for their input. This evening my dog went to visit my neighbours dog (a 2yr old neutered black lab), jumped the fence and proceeded to mount him! I was absolutely gobsmacked, what ever is that all about? As you may know, my dog had never mounted anything at all, and we even doubted he managed it with the bitch in season he was together with. Perhaps he does know after all! I know mounting like that can be a dominance thing, and he is certainly dominant over the lab and always has been, but.........???? I am sure someone can offer some more words of wisdom.

Perhaps he's just "practising" and exercising his muscles for the "real" thing :D :D :D

Instinct was to shout and tell him to get off but I remembered what you guys said about making him reluctant the next time and we just separated them in the end, but he was certainly keen AND persistent! It was so strange as this was not the sort of behaviour I had ever seen from him before.

my 6 month old puppy dog is trying to mount my bitch, who is not in season nor is she due, but I am tryin g not to tell him no, as I want him as a stud dog, at least he is keen !!!!!

I'm experiencing it the other way round!
My IW boy was mad for it when my IW girl (his daughter) was in in June so I was on guard constantly but our little Black & Tan terrier has just come in now and he isn't even sniffing her, it's like he knows there's nothing there for him! Has anyone else ever noticed this?

It could be experience. He may well have learnt that for 10 days or so its not worth doing anything so isn't bothering in the first few days but then ...................................... watch out.

He is a v.wise old bird and although he has only been used twice I'm sure he knows all there is to know.
Will be extra vigilant towards the end of next week, although the size difference should *probably* be enough contraception in itself! She is 10" at shoulder he is 35" !

I once watched in total amazement to see a yorkshire terrier mate a staffy bitch! Both latch-key dogs. The bitch backed up to a small wall and the yorkie stood on the wall! I don't know if she had any yorkie pups (as she was then mated by numerous other dogs) but you have to give them 10/10 for ingenuity :D

I know of a boxer x jack russell litter, and the JR was the mum!

Nicky do you want to see pictures of the boys? I have one, boarding his brother and I have to say they are the most placid dogs I've ever had in my house. The litter split with half looking like boxers and the other half looking like Parsons at 4mths they are now 17 and 19 inches tall.

The kittens climb into their food bowls and steal their food, my schips jump all over them and play rough without a moan from the pups. They are soooo laid back it's untrue non of the boxer lively behaviour and our pommie just climbs on either of them when they go to sleep and uses them as cushions. The one does seem to have picked up on the terrier intelligence but both are clicker training well at the min.
