Reba broke her front leg today while playing outside.  She jumped up on her mom (who was on a step) bounced off her, and landed wrong.  Breaking her leg just above the wrist.  She is at the vets now, getting her leg splinted and I can pick her up at 6pm. 

As far as breaks go, it is a very clean break, and we are hopefull that this will not affect her movement (as she has the most wonderful hackney I could have asked for!)

Thank you so much.  I am so worried for her, and I am crying my eyes out.  I just hope that she heals ok, and that she will be able to walk ok.

The big consern with this brake is that it is too close to the growth plate to put screws in, so we have to hope that she does not move it within the cast before it really starts to heal, but we really have our fingers and toes crossed. 
I am so glad that Kory was home at the time, would not want to have to explain this to her when she walks in the door.  Bad enough that I was the one outside suppervising puppy play time, as Kory was on this phone just inside the door.

Oh dear poor Reba!  I hope that it heals fully.

My grandparents had a bitch who was fully mature but fractured her back leg bone to peices.   Was a right mess with a brace on the leg with screws to help heal and once recoverd you would never have known.  Her movement wasn't affected at all.  Fingers crossed it will be the same for Reba.

Reba is now home.  She has a shocking pink cast with blue hearts, and a green "OUCH" on it.  They also gave her a flower bandana, just spoiled her more.

They gave her pain meds, to ease her a bit, although she still seems in a lot of pain.  Poor girl.

I have to take her back in two weeks to get her re-xrayed to see how healing is going.  Hopefully it is healing straight and wont affect her movement.  But the main thing is, at this point, that Reba is ok. 

I have the best vets ever!  I couldnt ask for more.  And to add some "personal" embellishments to the cast, and to give her a bandana, how sweet and special.  (Although I was a bit nervous when I went to pick her up and they said "she's all girl-ified!", but its all good)

She has eaten a little, so hopefully it doesnt upset her stomach. 

My poor little baby, I love her so much. 

Yes, she has to be kenneled all the time and carried out to the yard.  Thank goodness she is only 4 pounds, dont think I could carry a much heavier dog anymore.  Remember when Joy dislocated her shoulder and it was hard enough then carrying her at 35 pounds, and I am a few years older now.
Reba is kennel trained and does like her kennel so we are not having problem with that right now, probally will when it starts to heal and does not hurt so much, but we will cross that bridge when we get to it.
Now of a friend of my sisters that had to crate a dog because of long bone and it was wild when he started doing it, but was the best kennel dog he ever had by then end of it, so when we are starting as a good kennel dog, we will probally have the best going, or maybe from boardom the worse.  Excuse my spelling as the brain aint working to good tonight.
I do thank everyone for all thier support and good thoughts as it is helping with my nerves.  When I get thinking and seeing her fall in my head, I come down to the computer and read them, it calms me down.

So pleased to hear she is sorted out and the vets did a good job.
May she heal fast and you both get over the shock quickly too.

Poor Reba hope she gets better soon. My friends boxer Pup broke her leg at 8months just bouncing as boxers do but now it is all healed up with no problems so hopefully you will be the same. As far as keeping her pup calm she used rescue remedy drops regularly in her water or directly in her mouth and felt it help. Towards the end of her needing to be crated  she also used zelkene because she felt her pup need a bit more help to cope with being in her crate when it no longer hurt her.

Poor Reba sending healing thoughts. My little yorkie, who only weighs 4lb now, fully grown, broke her leg at 12 weeks. Her break affected her growth plate and she needed lots of cage rest. Im glad to say that she is now 4 and is absolutely fine.

Reba was at the vets again today, the little mischief maker decided she would chew her cast (was only left alone for 10 minutes!)  so it was re-taped, and it was sprayed with some bitter apple to hopefully make it so she wont want to chew it.  She also has a Elesabethan (sp) collar on, so she cant reach it, only for when she is out of sight. 

With all the replys saying that their pups were fine after a broken leg, it gives me hope.  Reba's didnt affect her growth plate, it broke just above that.  So hopefully she will be fine once it heals. 

Anyone know what I can use on her cast to make it so she doesnt want to chew it?  They sprayed bitter apple on it yesterday, and I am using a cone collar on her, but she can still reach the end of her cast and chew it. 
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  I dont want her to wreak her cast and have her leg not heal well. 

I have had two Papillons with broken front legs one at 14 months whose break was treated in a cast and another at 5 months who had her leg plated.  We tried bitter apple/lemon, perfume and even stop n grow (stops nail biting) none woked, only way I could keep them from having a chew was to have there (cone) elizabethan collar on.  Seems like Reba may need one a little longer.  Hope all heals well.

Have you tried taping some kitchen foil over it? if you ever put it on your teeth you will know how horrible it feels. might be worth a try, i know we have used it sucessfully for persistant puppy chewers. keeping fingers crossed for you and your little one.

They work very well as long as the wound is not too far away from the collar.  They seem much more comfortable than the traditional lampshade collar and the dogs don't bump into doorways etc.

My Dad tried that once in his car on the lip for the parcel shelf.  The dog licked the mustard off first and then continued the chewing!

My eldest Beardie is the same - so it doesn't work on all dogs! 

Only just seen this - so sorry poor Reba's hurt, and fingers crossed she heals well. It's good it wasn't on her growth plate, and pups heal very quickly because they grow so fast, so hopefully she won't be out of action for too long and she'll be back to normal. You can try clove oil on the cast to stop chewing - it's an essential oil - you can get it from places like Holland and Barrett over here, not sure whether you have them over there?

I had her at the vets today, because I thought her cast had slipped (I am seeing more and more leg each day), but they said the support splint was still good, and that as long as that was in place, then they didnt need to change it. 

Off to go try some of these ideas!  I need to do something to get her to stop chewing on her cast.

Reba is doing better, I wont know how its all healing until next Tuesday when she gets xrays done.  Although, she is a little tyrant eating her cast constantly!  I have yet to find something that stops her from doing it, only slows her down.  She is so frustrated right now, as she so wants to play.  She does have time out for herself, but she calls to the other pups when they are out.  I feel so sorry for her. 

Let us know how it goes on Tuesday.

Today Reba goes in for her xrays - the two week mark - to see how she is healing.  Whether or not its healing straight, healing ok, etc.  She also gets a cast change (wonder what colour it will be this time!)

In one hour, she will be at her appointment.  I dont know how long its going to take until I know results from xrays (when she broke her leg, she was there all day!!!)  If they have to sedate her (and with a 4 month wired for sound min pin puppy, thats almost a given!!), it could be a while before she comes home.

Please send prayers for a good result!!!  I am hoping and praying so hard right now that it is!!!

Reba is home. 

The xray looks good, and so there is a chance it may only be another 2 weeks of the cast, and then having to be very careful with her while the muscles and tendons get back into shape.  There is a very slight misallignment, but only the width of a hair so it will not be noticable when the rest of the leg gets back into shape.  Her knee is not stiffing up much, and we can still see the hackney action when she was slapping at the air, (being held in the tech's arms).

Now we can be more optomistic about her recovery.

That brilliant news. Heres hoping for a complete recovery for you. I had a huge GSD once who shattered his upper arm he had 6 pieces screwed and plated together and lots of small chips washed out, it was a mess, but he recovered in time and though walked with a limp (Not surprised..we thought they would take his leg of it was so bad) acctually not a limp more of a swinging motion but he had another 6 years of full and active life afterwards.
Now Reba..be good and let the cast do it's work then you can get out into the show rings and do your Mummy proud!

Well her cast went from Neon pink (hated it after a while) to a shocking neon green!!!  She needed a bit of a change.  Although she now knows that the cast does come off, so I am hoping that she doesnt try to continue to take it off herself. 

Also, she got a cool Canada Day Bandana to wear tomorrow. 

Fashion is way more important than healing LOL 

I am so happy that she seems to be healing fine, and that hopefully she will be able to show her heart out when she is due to come out in September for Junior Puppy Classes.  I am just to overjoyed!!  I was worried that she wouldnt be able to walk, and had all these horrible thoughts running through my head.  My friend had a dog with a broken leg (also min pin) and her leg bowed out because the cast started to bend while healing, and so her leg was miss-shapen.

How's Reba doing since?

she seems to be in some pain, as the way the cast is done, now she is walking right on her toe nails!  before the cast went over the foot, and protected her toes.  She is starting to swell a bit in the shoulder too.  Good thing I have a vets appointment tomorrow (puppy shots, and Cher's shots) and I will bring it up with the doctor then. 
But this cast, she isnt trying to chew it!  Thank goodness!!!! 

Poor pup, I always feel so sorry for the dogs when they have to have treatment like casts etc. because they can't know we are doing it for their benefit. My little Missy had to have a mammary strip earlier this year and had to wear a lamp shade collar because she wouldn't stop worrying the stitches, she kept giving me dirty looks every time I put it on her.
Lots of healing thoughts for Reba

Well, had Reba at the vets again today, she has a couple sores under the cast, which needed tending to.  She got put on AB as well, because the sores are open and weeping.  She also got cleaned up, and a new cast (this time a royal purple).  I take her back next week for her xrays and too have a look at how her leg is progressing. 

What would I do without the wonderful people at my vet!  They have been amazing!
