**URATE STONE - DNA TESTING - FOR BULLDOGS**
What are Urate Stones?
Hyperuricosuria means elevated levels of uric acid in the urine. This
trait predisposes dogs to form stones in their bladders or sometimes
kidneys. These stones often must be removed surgically and can be
difficult to treat. Hyperuricosuria is inherited as a simple autosomal
recessive trait. The trait can occur in any breed but is most commonly
found in the Dalmatian,Bulldog and Black RussianTerrier.

Symptoms
Urate stones may cause blood in the urine (hematuria) (giving the
appearancteh at the animal is urinating blood)but sometimes there may
be no signs at all. Painful urination or straining to urinate are other signs.
Urinary tract infections are commonly associated with bladder stones.
Smallers tones may become lodged in the urethra, especially in male
animals, causing urinary tract obstruction and the inability to urinate.
This condition cause as cute renal failure, hyperkalemias, septicaemia, and
death within a few days.

What can we do to prevent this?
We can have our dogs genetically tested by the Animal Health Trust.
This is done by a cheek swab that is sent out to you, it is a painless and
non-invasive method and only takes a minute to do. Results should be
back within a couple of weeks. They will let you know if your dog is
affected or not with this painful condition.

For more info and to order cheek swabs please contact; AHT the
Kits for taking cheek swabs are available by phoning
01638 555621 or via e-mailto swab.request@aht.org.uk.
Further information can be obtained by e-mailing
dna.testing@aht.org.ukA. list of prices can be found on our
web-site http:| www.aht.org.uk.

All Bulldogs should be tested for this condition prior to
breeding to help stop affected puppies being born.
**ONLY BUY A BULLDOG PUPPY OFF URATE STONE DNA TESTED PARENTS**

ETA;
I'd also like to add that the poster was approved by the AHT prior to it being distributed so all of the info is 100% accurate,
and free to share or post on your Bulldog breeder/owner website's.
The more people that know about the test the more people that will have the choice to test.
Currently the test costs £67 in the UK,
The AHT are a non profit organisation.

Thank you,
your help in spreading the word about this test is really appreciated,

You would have to ask the kennels you mentioned if their using the urate test,
i can't speak for other people im only letting bulldog breeders know about the availability of the urate stone dna test.
But if you were ever looking to buy a bulldog pup i would be happy to pass your details on to uk breeders who are using this test.

Is this test listed on the KC website as one of the tests they will record results for? I know several places do some types on DNA testing but the laboratories doing them are not the ones working with the KC. PRA is one example of such a DNA test.

hi

the kc are going to provide the data base for the urate dna test and by officially recognising the test it will become a requirement for accredited breeders to use this test,

Well lets hope they sort it out pronto as its well known that some bulldogs have been passed clear and have needed ops to remove them.
An empty vessel makes the most noise. :-)

Hi

For the KC or the AHT to do anything regarding the dog you spoke of the owners would need to let them know.........up to now the aht have had no information or feed back regarding the problem you've mentioned and if approached they will run the test again free of any charges and have assured me they would be happy to help sort any problems out.
was the stone sent to a lab for analysis ?

moved for admin

were the stones analysed ?

up to now the aht have had no information or feed back regarding the problem you've mentioned and if approached they will run the test again free of charge and have assured me they would be happy to help sort any problems out.
It would also be a idea to inform the kc and the breed council/club's....

until the rumours are substantiated with evidence and the evidence is given to relevant bodies (experts), i'd recommend others to follow the advice from the genetic experts like the AHT and the University of California (Davis) who both offer this dna test,
http://www.aht.org.uk/genetics_US.html

the kc who are supporting this dna test its on their web site and they will also supply a open data base and update registration documents,
http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/2691/pg_dtl_art_news/pg_hdr_art/pg_ftr_art

the bulldog breed council who as you know represent the breed clubs, recommend all dogs from lines affected with urate stone disease should be tested with the urate stone dna test to eradicate the problem................
http://www.bulldogbreedcouncil.co.uk/

so all the above are wrong ???
