I want to wean/feed my bitches litter on BARF.

Now i currently feed all my dogs on BARF, but all are adults so i have no idea about what i can feed a litter, regarding portion sizes, and increasing portions as they get older, and how and when to do it, etc etc etc....

Does anyone know of a good book to guide me through all of this??

Or if anyones got the time, feel free to respond with advice :-) :-)

I've started with the tiniest bit of pre-frozen minced beef (frozen to kill the bacteria that can be harmful to dogs) - they love it!  There are lots of BARF feeders on here who will give you lots of good advice.

If you've got a good butcher/source of bones etc you are half-way there - otherwise Landywoods deliver on a four-weekly rota to most areas.
Treat every stressful situation as a dog would. Pee on it and walk away

i also wean mine onto minced beef and chicken mince (finely minced) i alternate between the two for the first week or two then by 5 weeks old they are having tripe and lamb too. Then onto chicken wings/drumsticks. They love it, i must add i do give access to puppy kibble to so as to ensure they dont miss any nutrients at such an important stage in their development.

They leave me with a supply of dry and raw and therefore that gives the new owner the option of what they will keep their puppy on, as much as i would prefer them to keep to raw it is just not suitable for everyone, therefore if the puppies have been having some kibble they will be happy eating that, should the new owners decide that is their choice.

Good info in:
Grow your pups with bones- Dr.Ian Billingshurst
This is his second book and updates the first but has a second half which is 'Feeding for Breeding' :-)

My personal opinion on this is that you should find a 'Mentor' in your own breed, there is no better substitute for this. (you need to hear the good and the bad, and similar to my breeds retiticence to talk openly about fights in harness there does seem to be the same in the 'BARF' world in relation to bad experiences, But to my mind the big picture is a good thing not a bad thing ;-))

Meantime there is a yahoo group BritBarf which has some very experienced (longer than 5 minute experts you see cropping up on most forums ;-)) members and the owner/creator of the site is a great chap who strives to give balanced accurate info :-) You have to apply to join and it takes a while for acceptance but worth the wait.

Hope this helps.
