This is not a major problem but what do people think. 14mth old pomxchi has had problems with housetrainning but over the last 2 months and the door being open a lot has become very good only 1 accident when I was upstairs and the door was shut.
however due to the hot weather and her being a bit older now I am leaving her crate door open over night. I feel that way she can lay on the floor or find a cooler spot. When locked in crate nousetraining no problem doesnt always even bother toget up when I open door, with it open all night I get puddles. As I said not a big problem on the kitchen floor I am more worried about her going backwards with training what do others think ?
i've never used a crate but i would go back to basics for a while as if this was a puppy. go back to taking the dog out for the toilet and reward system for a while and if needs be maybe get up once in the night for a few nights to break the habit of weeing on the floor.
make sure your floor is really clean else the dog will continue to wee in the same place.
you could also try going to bed later to limit the time left and having a walk before bed so that the dogs had a few wees and is tired enough to sleep most the night.
maybe a play pen rather than a crate would help so that the dog can still lie on the floor but doesn't have too much room to wee in.
i've never used a crate and have a dog stair gate on the utility door at night but i would think that your either going to have to start using the crate again or go back to basics.
not sure that helps but see how it goes and remember not to tell the dog off for messing, only reward toileting in the right place.
When cleaning up the accidents make sure you use biological soap powder or the smell will remain and be your dogs clue as where to go again. I would revert to sleeping back in the crate with the door closed. This is obviously where your dog knows his place and is comfy. You can buy fans that clip on to the crate to keep the dog cool.
Now the weather has cooled a bit have gone back to shutting the crate and guess what she doesn't even bother to get up when we do unless I insist, and push her out ! having been in her crate from about 11.00 to 7.00 am. She is a little minx. As far as cleaning up I have used every thing I can think of and if she does go in the house where she goes is just random it as if she thinks "o well I am here so here I go"
Its weird having had 3 dogs befor and also have a gsd atm too all of whom were trained to go in one area of the garden and on command this little one defies everything. Have to be careful with using treats to encourage as she is certainly not undernourished !

You will find that GSD's and larger breeds are far easier and quicker to housetrain than the toy breeds.
Before someone comes along and says that their toy dog was clean from day one, I am aware that some are easier than others. I find Chihuahuas far cleaner than Yorkshire Terriers, but, it is perfectly usual for small dogs to take longer on the house training front.
The hurrier I go - the behinder I get!
Well I am learning about toys all the time still we are managing much better now (she is just over a year) have given up on the command thing and settling for just going outside and with exception of this latest quirk most times she is fine as long as I remember to make sure she can get out or let her out regularly I know it is not because she cannot hold her bladder/bowels as she is so good in her crate day or night. It just doesn't seem to matter to her where she goes unlike the bigger dogs who always tell me if they want to go out or rush to the door.
