I have given Moose a course of medicine (can't remember the name) prescribed by our vet which was supposed to stop her milk production from the phantom pregnancy she has been having. We finished the course on Friday but she is still producing milk. She has as well over the last few days gone off her food, might be though through the extreme humidity and hot weather we have been having.

What I need to know is this going to be gradual drying up of the milk or shall I take her back to the vets for another check up? I have never experienced a phantom pregancy so would appreciate peoples help.

Thanks

Lucy

Hi. If you haven't already you need to reduce the quantity and quality of her food for a couple of weeks. Her body is already "telling her" to eat less, as you mention she is losing her appetite. I would cut as much protein out of her diet as possible - if you feed a complete diet, divide her normal amount by at least half and make up the volume with plain boiled rice. If you feed meat and biscuit type diet, cut out all but a cereal spoonful of meat and reduce the volume of the biscuit by half. Give her as much exercise as she can take without exhaustion and take her out and about with you as much as possible - dont let her mope in bed with "imaginary babies". If after a couple of days the milk is not reducing - cut her feeds down more. As long as she is in good condition to start with a week or two of half rations will do her no harm and she will soon make any lost weight up again quickly when the milk has dried up.

Hi

We have already reduced her food and she has no time to mope as she has been kept very active with lots of walks and lots of playing at home! :D

She has as well been sick the last couple of days but she seems to be Ok in herself.

I am keeping a close eye on her as I am really concerned that she has had two infections since her first season four months ago and just want to make sure she is not developing another. I think I maybe worrying about nothing but it is difficult not to be an over protective mummy !

Thanks

Lucy
