Previous Next Up Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Westie being sick after evening meal only!

My 15 month old Westie is on Hills ID tinned dog food permantley as he has a sensitive stomach and the vet's have said he can stay on this. He has been on it for 7 months now and he has come on leaps and bounds and has put weight on.

The last 2 weeks or so, he has been sick after his evening meal - not every time just sometimes. He has his breakfast at 6.45am when I go out to work and then we give him the remainder half of his tinned food about 6pm. We had been keeping this in the fridge all day and wondered if the cold food was upsetting his stomach so have been covering it with tin foil and storing it in a dark cupboard and that seems to have worked a little bit.

He is only ever sick in the evening and you can tell as soon as he eats he starts pacing around the lounge, licking his lips and then howling and crying as if he is going to be sick. We sometime take him out for a walk just to see if that settles him and it sometimes work and he is fine. When he is sick it is literally just his food that he brings back up - nothing else. He then gets exceptionally protective about it and won't let you pick it back up to clear it away and he insists on eating it back up and he never brings it back up again.

If he leaves some of his food in his bowl in the evening, he will go back a couple of hours later and finishes it off with no problems at all.

We sometimes let him have some cheese or a tiny corner of some toast and he is always trying to eat our food when we have our dinner and he is otherwise his normal happy self.

Any suggestions?

He is very active, energetic and lively which makes me think it is nothing serious.

have you told your vet?

No not yet - wanted some opinions first.

Most nights he is fine and its the occasional one that he is sick. Don't like seeing him poorly but he is fine in himself and is not always sick!

personally, if it were me, i wouldnt think to ask opinions online, id just call the vet, especially as its being going on so long.
your vet would also want to know, as its a reaction to a diet they prescribed.

I'd agree if it's been going on for a few weeks it needs further investigation. There could be any number of reasons so I'd get him checked out by the vet.

First, canned food needs to be refrigerated.   Just microwave it lightly (not on full power) until it is just warm before feeding.

Are you sure your dog is not being sick in the morning, throwing up and then eating it later?

It might be something minor, like eating too quickly, but only the vet can tell you if this needs further investigation.
