My Border Terrier bangs her bum against everything. When people come to visit she bangs her bum aginst their legs, when she is out in the garden she will bang her bum against the plant pots, if you are sat there with your legs crossed and your foot is sticking up she bangs her bum against it.
Why does she do this? She doesn't appear to be in any discomfort or itching, is it like the female version of a male dog humping everything?

my guess without seeing her would be anal glands? she could be trying to itch her bum by banging it?
does she have fishy smell about her?

Could be anal glands, but it sounds a bit like the dominance behaviour my male & female Cavs sometimes carry out - they will walk past each other and barge their hips and back ends into the other one - weird dogs!

LOL, I've never found another dog owner whose dog does this - I thought it was only mine!  I have a Patterdale Terrier (similar to the border but black, smaller, and less amenable!), and she bumps against things when she is in a playful mood.  It seems to be a signal that she wants to play, similar to a play bow, but she also does it when she is impatient to get a move on - if I'm standing still chatting when we're out walking, for example.  She has been known to bump strangers legs when they're passing too!  She's never bumped my plant pots, as far as I know...........

My husband has nicknamed her Bumpy, for that very reason.  I doubt its anal glands.....if they're itchy, they'll do something really obvious like skid across the living room rug on their butt. :-)

And no, I don't think its a sexual behaviour either - my dog does rampant humping, given half a chance.

I'm sure its an invitation to play, albeit rather a dominant one, as LucyDogs points out.

My Welsh Terriers bum bump, especially when running as a way of knocking others off course.

My Welsh Terrier does it too. Once threw my great aunt's sheltie into the kitchen dresser with her bum. ( he was annoying her ) We never told aunt tho ;-)

None of our past dogs have done it though , just presumed it was one of her odd little ways. Nice to know there are others that do it!!

My male Border does this too! He is also a massive bum waggler when he wags his tail.

Very funny.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I think Borders are one of a kind though! :-)
