Hi.
My 7month Lab was spayed 3 weeks ago, no problems. When her stitches were removed I pounted out deep 'lumps' at either side of the scar. A few days ago the scar became red and looked angry so I took her back to the vet and she gave her antibiotics and said the lumps were much worse. I have to take her back in 2 days and if they are not any smaller they will have to 'go back in' and take a look. What is happenning?? The vet doesnt think there is a hernia because the muscle feels intact but she thinks it could be allergic reaction to internal sutures. Has anyone else come across this? I am not relishing the thought of another op for her.

A friends Dobe bitch has had a similar alergic reaction with lumps over a large area about an inch thick. On investigation it was found that her Microchip had broken, and her body had mounted an immune response. The vet has opened her up twice, and she had to have drains to drain fluid, and her whole shoulder is lumpy and proud!

I do hope they will sort her out, as these alergic reactions can be quite severe!

It's getting worse. The infection is clearing up nicely but the scar area looks as if it is breaking down almost ulcerating!!! She is so young and healthy and I don't understand this at all. I see the vet again tomorrow but I am not sure whether to wait that long.

I had something similar in a Kerry Blue who had a caesarian sone years ago - she was allergic to the internal stitches, and it was very frightening. The stitches broke down and to put it very crudely, her guts fell out. Extremely frightening.

The silly vet, not realising, stitched her back using the same stuff, and the same thing happened. Horrid. Second vet sorted her out luckily.

This was some twelve years ago now - hope things have moved on.

Hi Anyone who is interested.
Meg now fully recovered and panic over. It seems an infection had been festerring and the anti-biotics cleared it up.
This is my first dog and I never really understood the depth of feelings you can have for a dog until now.
Thanks to all who replied.
Pat.
