Hi everyone , i have a new puppy called snoop who is a staffi, i am struggling slightlly with his biting as he can get a bit rough but he is a lovable and cuddly pup as well just has  his hyper moments.

At firs he went to the pad no problem but now he doesnt. Any advice and training help would be gratefully appreciated as i have 4 children as well and the more teeth he gets the kids are getting scared which of course he senses and uses to his advantage.I just want to train him well so he has the best start in life

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

First thing - ditch the puppy pads (they only teach puppies that it's okay to relieve themselves indoors, which of course it isn't!) and take him out to the garden to relieve himself immediately he wakes in the morning or after a nap; after every meal; after every play session; and at least once every hour.

As regards the 'biting' - this is normal puppy behaviour, just as it's normal baby behaviour to put everything into their mouths. When he starts it's best to say "No, gently" in a calm-but-firm voice, then either give him a toy to bite on instead or just remove all attention from him for a couple of minutes.

Make sure that he gets plenty of time out for rest and naps - puppies are notoriously bad at judging when they're getting overtired and, just like overtired children, get bad-tempered and emotional. So when you can see this starting it's up to you to calm the atmosphere.

Good luck!

I agree the puppy pads are no good, i have a 16 week old puppy and we went through the mouthing part but they come out of that pretty quickly

Hi, Welcome :-)

Couple of good articles here for a bit of background reading,Methods from Karen Pryor and Dr. Ian Dunbar both very respected trainers detailed: (click on the blue links to reveal)
Teaching your Puppy bite inhibition

A good one for the kids too is: The Kennel club 'Safe and Sound' interactive computer game! <- knowing what kids are like these days (Better than us on computers!) I thought this might be helpful?

Hope these are of use. :-)

Pups can be quite mouthy at this age, He has to learn whats accpetable and what isnt - tell him NO an make sure he knows what you are telling him

I have a 28 week old staff pup with the same problem I just walk out the room when she bites and if she does it again when I came back in I give her a toy or a chew so she learns that biting humans is bad but biting toys and chews are fun
