My daily dog lady asked me if I knew why her girl was bringing stones in and chewing on them. It seems she never swallows them (thank-goodness) but wondered if I knew why she did it. I havent a clue as none of my pooches have ever done this. I did look it up on 'th tinternet but there were so many different reasons from calcium difficiency to anxiety so am still confused. She is with me two days a week and sometimes for full weeks when her mum is on holiday and she has never done it whilst with me. Any ideas???

PS She is an eighteen month old rescue with no apparent behaviour problems at all. she is a darling.

my rott boy does this.  He appears to sook them and roll them about his mouth and then spits them out on the floor and will spit them out on command.  I think he just likes the taste!

I have had puppies do this but always break the habit  as I worry about them swallowing one and getting a blockage.They do seem to grow out of it .

My 18monthold does like to bring in a stone or bit of similar textured rubbish, she loves to flick it around and generally play with it but does soon tire of it so I can grab it throw it away.#She doesn't lack in anything as far as I know, it just 'floats her boat'.
Pretty sure there is no harm in it, as if they were to want to chew and swallow them they would.

My youngest chewed stones.  I broke her of the habit as I was worried about swallowing and breaking a tooth.  (Latter sounds silly but for a breed just an inch taller than a cavalier she was eating hard toys designed for rotties, there's power in those jaws!)  She only got a stone if she hadn't been 'entertained' for a period of ten minutes or more, highly active/intelligent breed.  It may be something as simple as boredom.

My sister's dog does this and for some reason unbeknown to me she has allowed this to continue. I now make sure i take them from him if i see him with a stone, he tends to use them like a ball, way too many people throw them for him and then he comes back and chews them. He now has no teeth left per say, more stumps.. So there it goes, don't allow your dogs near stones!!!
The amount of times i have told people not to throw stones for him when he is here and they ignore me or for some reason go deaf on me when i tell them..

Right, thank-you all. i will pass that on to lovely girl's owner. The most important think, whatever the reason behind it, is to take them off her. she might swallow one when she is laughing or something. lol

I've noticed that a couple of pups out of my current litter are bringing them inside.  Don't even know where from, guess they're just turning the earth over and finding them.

They drop them and I pick them up and throw them in the bin.  It doesn't look as if they're trying to eat them, they are just covered in spit!

Nowt as strange as dawgs!!!
