This is for Harvey, who was originally named Tyson. It didn't suit him at all. A gentle, simple mastiff at our rescue centre who was given up by his owners at 8 months of age, because he had health deficits. It turned out that he had cerebellar hypoplasia which caused him to fall over without warning, and be slow to register things, and he was generally weak.

He was a soul that glowed, gentle, kind and vulnerable, the kind of soul that touches you simply by coming into contact with him. They were about to get him a quad cart, to give him the ability to walk without falling and hurting himself, but he was getting worse and worse, and specialist scans and test confirmed the diagnosis, together with the fact that it was severe and he was degenerating quite rapidly with no chance of improvement. The specialist recommended euthanasia.

He found true love in a kennel girl at the centre, although everybody loved him, she adored him. He was just 10 months old when he was put to sleep last Tuesday. She was holding and loving him when it was done. Everyone, but especially she is distraught.

To the people who owned him for his first 8 months, and whom no doubt he loved and adored I ask: How could you? How could you let him down so badly when he needed you? How could you? - Don't ever get another dog, you are not worthy.

Harvey, run through that meadow at the bridge, free in mind and body. God bless.
