i know it sounds a bit mad but my dog just can't stop himself from licking my sofa, its almost an ocd. There is nothing wrong with his mouth, hes perfectly ok in health, but he knows he's not supposed to, so he starts by licking his paws and then moves on to the sofa, hopeing I won't notice,my friend says he just likes the fabric(it looks and feels like a distressed suede) but hes getting worse,I do usually put throws on but they do get a bit scrabbled by the end of the day.
Any Ideas?

why not use the don't chew spray which you can get from most pet shops!

My GSD does exactly the same, he starts licking/washing his paws & then moves onto the sofa. Mine isn't fabric though, it's leather. I either tell him to leave it, or I stick my foot in front of him, he loves licking feet too!
Beardy

Is he cleaning up after himself?
My dog will lick his paws/legs and in the process gets saliva (generally in the form of huge slimy slobber trails) all over whatever he is laying on, so once he's finished cleaning himself, he cleans up all the mess he's made by licking it up. Simply wiping the area he has been cleaning himself on sorts it out (sofa, dog bed, floor), as it means there is no saliva for him to have to worry about cleaning back up

My very old hound also licks the sofa which is actually her bed. Mostly when she is settling down after a meal. It used to annoy me, but it is doing no harm really, so I just ignore it and after a few minutes she falls asleep. I think it is just a contented comfort thing......like a baby sucking its thumb.

Both mine do too. It's normally just before they nod off and start snoring! My husband takes exception though when they start licking his trousers.
My chihuahua does this too with my leather sofa, like everyone else has said before she nods off to sleep, i too think its a comfort thing as she has done it from been a baby.
As my dogs follow me everywhere they tend to visit me when i`m taking a bath and i often lay there listening to them cleaning theirself and when my chih has done she moves on to the bathroom door for some strange reason, my doors are solid pine, not varished or anything and i often see wet patches on the doors where Ellie my chihuahua has done her licking, maybe she thinks she is helping me by cleaning for me...lol

Licking excessively usually means they are in some sort of pain...
I would get it checked by vet if you have not already done so
Also could be Anal Glands need emptying as our dog had the same issue and after his anals were emptied each time he would stop the licking....
Good luck

My older WSS is just the same, it's the soulful look on his face as he meditates on sofa licking that cracks me up. Coming out of the shower both dogs go straight for the feet...
OK, so the cream carpets were a bad idea
