Have you checked the folds in his lips???   in breeds with loose lips and slobbery mouths this can lead to infection of the lip fold and is often the source of truly pungent pongs :-(    in which case a vets visit would be necessary.

If he's been checked out by the vet (friend's vet missed it with her dog eek ) then maybe Johnson's Odour tablets (Chlorophyll) may help - but I can't imagine what dose for a Dogue confused

Sadly some breeds can be rather doggy smelling, but sometimes changing their food can help, but it's trial and error.
Life is what happens while you're making other plans...

i had a problem with one of mine. if i stroked her and then sniffed my hand it was disgusting, she also had bad breath (she has clean teeth) it was so strong im sure the judges could smell it !
i changed my dog to one of the sensitive biscuits just as a test and the smell had gone within 3 days.

Had similar with dog that was on a trial with 'ranger' dog food she absolutly stank, you could smell when she came into the room and had to wash your hands every time you touched her, she rapidly went back onto Burns.......smell went :-)

I expect you've checked his ears, sometimes they can smell a bit rank unless you wipe them out regularly. A solution of vinegar in water is usually enough just to wipe the flaps each week, ratio of 1 part vinegar to 10 parts water. Otherwise raw feeding will normally agree with a dog's digestion. You will find much reduced poos, non-smelly too. Teeth and gums will also improve with raw feeding.

My GSD had very strong doggy smell.  Not really horrible just strong dog smell.   He had to be castrated owing to retained testicle and the smell disappeared straight away.  Smells gorgeous now!
