I know what you mean. When I was at home living with my family I never had the choice, it was terriers or border collies, although an uncle had field spaniels, which I suspect influenced my final choice of dog.
When I got married both my ex and I were involved with farming, so we had collies, then when we decided to have a family of our own, we then started looking for something different, by that time we were not working sheep so we did not immediately go out and buy a collie. More by luck than judgement we met a lovely flatcoat, although it was a couple of years later when we finally got our first flatcoat. My ex really loved springer spaniels which he now has and I have stayed with flatcoats.
Before we got our flatcoats though we had no idea which of the gundog breeds would suit us best, and looked at several breeds before finally settling for the flatcoat. We found the temperament and energy levels of the flatcoat were very much more appealing than some of the dog breeds we looked at, but it was a close call between them and a springer spaniel.
There are a lot of breeders here who have a lot of experience with their chosen breeds and i am sure they will be able to advise you on a good choice. The KC web link is very good, and another place to start looking and meeting the breeds is Discover Dogs hosted by the Kennel Club. Details of this event are on the KC web site.
Good luck with your search, I hope you will let us know what you decide to get and keep us updated as to progress of your puppy when you eventually get one. So few people actually ask for help before buying a dog, then live to regret it afterwards, because the dog they chose they cannot cope with. As you are making enquiries on a site supported by responsible breeders, you will get good advice, but what ever you do do not buy from a back yard breeder, pet shop or puppy farm or as stated on another thread from a bloke in the pub!
Do you have any ideas about what you are looking for? Large medium or small breeds? You will need to ask any breeder you get a puppy from for details of the health testing they have done prior to mating the parents. Do not buy from a breeder who tells you they do not health test their stock as they think it is not necessary.
