I am writing in the absence of the Kennel Club Chairman Ronnie Irving to object strongly to your front page story 'New war of words in KC/GSD battle' (October 2nd 2009).
The statement attributed to Mr Irving in the October 2009 issue of Dogs Today, in which he is alleged to have said that GSDs will be 'thrown out of the Kennel Club' has no basis in fact. As the author of your story admits, 'finding the source of the story has not been easy'. That is because this source does not exist. By repeating this falsehood, you have simply exacerbated the problems caused to the relationship between the Kennel Club and the GSD breed.
The article goes on to state that the Kennel Club does not deny the quote, which is simply mischief-making on behalf of the writer. As your writer knows, Mr Irving was, and remains at the time of writing, out of the country and could not be contacted prior to your deadline. We thus stated that whilst were not in a position to deny it categorically in his absence, we believed it to be highly unlikely indeed. Having had the opportunity to speak to him subsequently, I can confirm that he does indeed deny it.
As stated recently with regards to Bulldogs, the Kennel Club's position remains that it would be sad to part ways with any of the breeds which it currently recognises. There are no plans to throw GSDs out of Kennel Club licensed events. Far from it in fact - the Kennel Club wishes to find a way to come to an agreement on how to move things forward with the breed and the world of dogs in general.
