Any idea's on how to collect urine from my two older girls. My vets do a free health check for seniors so I'm taking my 3 oldies, all nearly 11 yrs, 1 boy and 2 girls.

I'd recommend a Uripet. Your vet should have them, or you can buy them online. Or you can make a similar contraption (shame Blue Peter never did a 'make' like this!) using a small foil take-away carton on a stick, or use a soup ladle ...

Make sure that the jars you put the samples in are spotlessly clean, and make sure the urine's as fresh as possible before your appointment.

We (rather my OH !) used a very clean plastic takeway container.  Worth practising first so that your dog gets used to the idea.  It's bad enough with one dog but if you have to get everyone to perfom on one day it might not be so easy - make sure you let them out one by one or you might miss them!!

Good luck :-)

Sounds like it's going to be fun, I think the old chap should be reasonably easy, he has a strange piddle action and I will be able to slip a rubber gloved hand underneath him and he won't notice. The girls will be more awkward as they are both very low squatters :-). I'll be digging out the do it your self assembly kit this evening. :-)

Me too :-) Both of my old ladies are neat in their nature when it comes to toilet, so I think there's going to be some surprised expressions when I interupt their flow :-)

What I'm wondering is... vet sends card through post offering free health check for seniors... but will I be hit for the bill on wee tests?

Mmmmm, if they send it away to look for anything important, then I'm sure you will have to pay a lab fee.  Or could it be another sales pitch, like the annual check up, to sell you wormers, flea stuff and boosters?  Once you're through the door they make you feel like an irresponsible owner if you give your dog everything they say that you need. :-(

I think that having a Vet to check is possibly a good idea for owners who don't groom or look at their dogs regulalry, but for those who are 'dog aware' they'd know if anything had changed and know when to take their dog for attention. :-)

When I had to collect urine from my bitches I used a 6 pint milk bottle, cut so as to make a long thin 'scoop'.

If you cut it correctly you end up with the longest side acting as a shallow chute for the wee to run down and the cap end is your collection bit (obviously leave the cap screwed on ;-) lol).

As mine is a small breed, and my girls literally sit on the ground to pee lol, i found I could pop this under them without any fuss or interuption to their normal pee position. :-D

i used a syringe and she luckily peed on a piece of clean concrete so i sucked it up quick before it ran away

I took a step back on this so say freebie health check and thought to myself 'have I got any health concerns with my oldies?'

Well no not really, OK so the old GR has a bit of stiffness in her right shoulder and she's got a hot spot on her haunch, but I'd like to bet that I can get some advice from CD and it won't cost me a brass farthing.

The freebie was to check for heart/lung health, bone/joint health, skin and eye health, but I can see that when I watch them run around fields.

I decided not to take the freebie option, cos I'm blowed if I'm going to stand in the vets and be made to feel like a bad owner cos I haven't kept up to date with vaccine's,and I don't get wormer or flea juice from them.

Pinky,
No good vet should be making you feel like this. I had one of these type of vets and i ended up along with many other reasons changing the practice as i didn't trust him. Have to add a few other people soon moved on after me due to many issues with this vet.. Shame as the rest of the staff i got on very well with.
I don't get all my products from the vets either, yes they are vaccinated, but will look to possibly titre test them as they get older providing this doesn't conflict with pet passports in any way.
