Hi ,
I am looking for a bit of advice from anyone who has been through the same thing really. My 7 year old GR bitch has been having trouble pooing. It started last thursday, the first day she was really quite unwell and off her food and i had heard her screaming when she tried to poo so rushed out and she did a tiny bit, then kept straining which then caused some bleeding. I took her to the vets, she had an internal and her glands emptied, temp normal, no build up so it wasn't looking like constipation. The vet has treated her for colitis to start with but isn't entirely sure this was the problem. She had an antibiotic jab and some tablets. She is now much brighter in herself but i noticed on our walk yesterday she screamed again when trying to do the first bit then was fine and went on to do about another 7 bits with no crying. She constantly looks round at her bottom. We are back again tonight for a follow up appointment so i am assuming they will look at other avenues now to try and find whats up. She is up to date with worming.
Has anyone had a similar problem and could help shed some light on it for me!

what do you feed? I was walking my neighbours dogs and he was doing the same which was freaking me out. It turned out that the bone content of his raw diet was too high. He was eating lots of bone but not eating as much meat or veg.
ali - with a staffy and a rottie not a chow, but very cheeky!

Give her some liquid Paraffin which may help her pass the over hard poo.

She is on Royal Canin. Thanks for your replies, vet could feel hard poo in her colon tonight so she is now on anti inflamms and lactulose. Fingers crossed this will work. If not, she is then going to be having the camera to see whats going on.

Don't want to worry you but we had a Rough Collie years ago who was like this and sadly it was found that she had cancer. Hopefully it's nothing as serious as this and hope that things can be sorted soon.

are you sure she hasn't eaten anything she shouldn't of and is having trouble passing it ie bone or anything she can chew up found round the house.

I cannot understand a Vet treating for colitis when it appears that if anything she is constipated. The only time I have ever heard one of mine yelp was when I was trying to extract grass from her. Could she have eaten anything that could be strangling the colon. Hope things improve.
The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue.

I would assume the vet would have checked for obstruction done ultrasound or x-ray to check for foreign objects.
This is important to avoid peritonitis. I know of dogs that have died from this where rotting matter stayed in the body that wouldn't pass.

Hi Mel, my youngest dog has had this problem from time to time and it's been one of the following:
1) when he was a puppy and used to chew small sticks - we don't get this one any more
2) when I've fed too much bone - I've since discovered that one of the minces I feed is very high in bone so problem solved I hope
3) when he's been eating grass and gets some stuck half in - half out
Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck at the vets

My last dog started to sceam when he tried to poop, the cause (checked by the vet) was obvious, he had been run-over by a car and the rear leg injuries & bruising to his body made it all very tender for him. The vet gave him some stuff (can't remember what it was called) to sprinkle over his food to make his poop softer, it did the trick untill all the tenderness went

Good luck with your dog, I hope the vet finds the root of the problem soon. I know how awfull it feels when you hear that dreadfull sceaming and see that pityfull look on thier face

Hey

I am guessing that your vet, seeing as they did an internal, ruled out any form of anal hernia? One of my boys has had a hernia since around 7 years of age causing him difficulty to pass faeces and often only passing small bits at a time (the first part always caused the most discomfort to pass).
He is controlled with liquid paraffin which makes it easier for him to pass soft stools. I also have to be careful with what I feed him as some foods add to his problem.

How is she now? Hopefully much improved.
