By streetmutt (*) [gb] Date 13.10.09 12:31 GMT
I have always added some tinned meat to my dogs dry food.  Was wondering what other people add and what they have found best? I have used Butchers and Wainwrights recently and Naturediet though mine were not so keen when it changed.  Sometimes just chicken, ham or tuna is this better?

If you need to add anything, a bit of tinned Chappie will do the trick perfectly.

I buy frozen blocks of food, one does both of mine for 2 meals.  Also tinned fish occasionally or natural yougurt if ive forgotten to defrost a block of food.

Mine always get our leftovers. I use the slow cooker a lot also for chickens and salmon pieces. They love all of it.

Only OH and me for Sunday roast, OH has another dinner on Mon from joint, call it 2 1/2 dinners from 1 joint (I am very small eater) so why do I buy chicken or joint big enough for at least 4 full size meals..............Yes Zuma loves his share on Sunday and usually Mon + Tues, this week it will be Wed as well!! as bigger than I thought eek . Other days he has tuna, sardines, raw egg, or if I am desparate some Nature Diet/Menu/Harvest.
Sucker.......yes I agree but 2 previous Shepherds were both a bit 'naw-not really hungry' so it's nice having one who is a shoveller with his meals.

I feed dry with either different sorts of freeflow mince, vegetables, ND or forthglade, chicken, lamb, tuna, white fish, sardines, just whatever I have in the freezer/cupboard really ;-)

I mostly feed raw now but keep a few kibble meals throughout the week.  Prior to changing I had one dog that was a bit fussy about dry food, although that changed when I added a second dog!!

I generally used Tesco dog food in gravy as it was quite runny and coated the kibble nicely.  Nowadays mine both quite like it crunchy so don't need anything added but I will stick leftovers in if I have them and I do like to add sardines in oil at least once a week. The only principle I really stick to is that of not mixing cooked meat with raw, or raw meat with kibble.  I also won't add anything too high in salt or sugar or anything too spicy.  Although they manage to get this by sticking their heads in the dishwasher - mayo spoons and curry a favourite :-)

I add to dry, either nature diet or jwb pouch and sometimes veg or frozen meat blocks.

I add Nature diet. Tried Nature Menu and Nature Harvet but ND seems to be favourite. I also prefer the consitency. I also add frozen mixed veg (thawed - a few times a week)

Alot of people will say that you shouldn't need to add anything to dry complete food (usually RAW feeders), However if i had to eat the same food everyday i would get a bit fed up. Adding extras makes it more intersting, and stops feeding time becoming monotonous.

I've never seen the point in adding anything to a complete dry -it is after all complete and nothing is meant to be added to not make it unbalanced. Be different if it was a mixer. Hence to the one meal a day my large dogs get dry (CSJ), I add water, nothing else. The other meal every day is raw meat or meaty bones or chicken carcasses etc.

Thank you for all your opinions, will keep with Wainwrights or naturediet but will try veg and tinned fish. Am currently changing over from AG to CSJ so will see how it goes.

Always use a 1/3 of a tin of chappie in the morning feed, they really love it.

I add tripe (occasioanlly will use 'Butchers Tripe' tinned dog food), every now & then I'll add white fish or sardines as a treat instead of the tripe.
