We had our first litter earlier in the year. All was well and mum has recovered so well (apart from chronic lack of coat!!). Anyway, she's now having her first season, bang on time (8 months) all seems to be well, but it's now 14 days since she started and she's bleeding still. I was wondering if this is normal? She seems to be loosing more than her first seasons before the pups. She's almost 3 years old.

My (castrated) male is telling me she is at her optimum time right now, but she's my first bitch, and I've always got at the back of my mind pyo, even though I understand the danger period is 6 - 8 weeks after season has finished.

Anyway, she seems happy enough, is eating well and relaxed.

Please help put my mind at rest... she means a LOT to me and I would hate something to go wrong through my inexperience.

My bitches have always showed colour for the full season, even if they've been successfully mated.

I was wondering if because she has now had pups, the blood loss might be more/go on for longer? I would say that by my male's reaction she's definitely ovulated now (she was mated days 14 & 16 last season) and was still bleeding at that point. She's just bleeding more this time.

If it's normal blood colour, I honestly don't think you have anything to worry about.  I've had girls bleed a lot longer with no problems.  I'm sure that you would notice if it was 'unusual' coloured blood, and, as long as it only smells of blood (sort of metallic is how I always smell it), I think she sounds fine.

Thanks for the advice. I'm not overly worrying, just needed to know it wasn't necessarily something to be worried about.

If it's any reassurance, I've had a bitch bleed for 5 weeks.  They tend to bleed for longer if they're not mated.  With anything, you know your bitch & how she is normally.  If she's off colour or anything then it's a different matter.  change in behaviour (if there is any) can be hormonal though.
