Hi all,
my bitch was mated at the weekend and we where considering giving her the Canine Herpes Vaccine. Is it worth giving???

It isn't going to hurt -but the first vaccination should be given before mating ideally (according to my vet), the second at around 7 weeks of pregnancy. I've just used it for a bitch of mine who had stillborn pups last time so we shall wait and see. She's 4 weeks pregnant at the moment. I've heard a lot of stories of people whose bitches  it worked for.

Hi I would not mate a bitch without it now. We at one stage had a few problems with newborns and since using it 3 years ago, WELL I WONT SAY ANY MORE I AM SUPERSTITIOUS. We give it on the day of mating or as close to it and then at 7 weeks in whelp. It is at our vet £35.00 per injection, but I think well worth it to save the life of a puppy.

Thanks guys! Spoke to my vet who said that the vaccine can be given between 7-10 days after mating and again just before whelping. I think the vaccine is Eurincin(prob not spelt correctly!) It is her first litter and I want to do everything possible to give her the best chance.

We have done in the past and are doing this time also, our girl was mated Saturday and yesterday.  Just contacted our Vet this morning for them to order it.  It depends on the make of vac as to when it's given.  Ours is 7-10 days after mating and then 1-2 weeks before due date.  Good luck.

Yes I think i am going to give it a go too. I have een trying to do lots of googling to find out a bit more about it and from what it says it can also help with litter size? Don't know how true this is?

Does anyone know how reliable the blood tests and swabs are when they check for CHV. I know you can get false negatives with the blood if they are not shedding at that time but can you get a false negative on the swabs as well.
