Just wondered what where peoples views on excercising a bitch afetr mating? Is there any risk to a bitch getting an infection?
By Brainless (*****) [gb] Date 22.10.09 10:15 GMT
No more than at any other time.

I excersise as normal right to the end, excersise will result in a fit bitch at whelping.

Obviously let her set the pace near the end and avoid her being bounced on.

Thanks Brainless,
I have been hearing soo much conflicting advice that you don't know what to do.

I agree with Brainless,I treat mine as normal until the last week when they are then kept on a lead, but still walked twice a day.

Ditto. An unfit bitch is almost guaranteed to have problems whelping. It's hard work and fitness is essential!

I continue to walk mine as usual and they decide the pace they want to go at. I will never forget the sight and sound of one of my girls chasing off after rabbits the day before she whelped - her "boobs" were slapping together as she ran, what a sound :-)

My bitch is now about 12 days before she is due to have her pups, and I've exercised her every day since her mating. She is slowing up now because she has lost her shape but I think she knows her limits so she does as much as she wants.

When her mother had pups 4 years ago, I exercised her every day including on the morning of the day she had her pups and she had a very good birth.  I do try to stop them drinking out of dirty puddles, eating rubbish etc though just incase.

Same here, my girl is about 15 days off and has had her two runs today, competing after the ball with her Mum.
The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue.

My girls got 18 days to go, will stop taking her out for runs etc about 10 days before she's due as they can have them early and don't want to take the risk!
If I wanted a Poodle, OES, TT or IWS I would have bought one. SWD's shd. be natural and rustic. No

My bitch was walked off lead with our little pack of hounds up until the day she whelped, she was even keen to go out (was not allowed) the day after whelping. She was slowing down but we just walked the rest at her pace and for as long as she was happy!  I think it makes for a fit and healthy bitch, I liken it to humans, they recommend you continue doing the excercise you did prior to pregnancy within your own limitations.
