Argos are selling these for £22 - has anyone used on on a dog?
I would presume that it should pick up the puppy heartbeats like a doppler does for a human. Just wondered if anyone had used one, before I spend the money??

I have a human doppler to scan dogs from 21 days but the probe has a different depth than a human fetal doppler.  To listen to a human baby's heart beat, the probe would have work at a depth of about 12-18 inches - sorry I talk old money!  That would be far to deep for the average dog so I'm not sure if it would be suitable at all.......

And the important component is the quality of the crystal.  I suspect that you might be better with a stethescope.

I just used a stethoscope when my bitch had puppies a couple of years back, I could hear them fine.

I used a stethoscope last time round and heard nothing, wasn't surprising really as there was a plastic thing that I should of taken off first DOH!!  Haven't tried it yet with Carmen might have a go, but in reality she's not a lie down and let mum listen to your pups kind of dog!

It works a treat despite being about 20 years old and a bit worse for wear (the cat chewed the business end )   Was thinking about getting a better one, but after discussing it with a GP friend, decided against it, he'd had trouble using a 'proper' one and told me that as long as I can hear what I need to it's working fine    I heard well enough to know how many pups and how many boys/girls but not which was which as I can never remember which are the 'tick' and which are the 'tock'

Just out of curiosity, at what stage can you here the heart beats? I have a bitch that may be 35 days but she is keeeping me guessing!! (my vets doesnt do scanning) and Im normally just.............lets wait and see!!

Has anyone here had their bitch palpated at this stage as Ive read it is hard to tell after 28 days and my vet is back from his jollys on wednesday.

If I decided to get a stethoscope has anyone got any tips or is it pretty straight forward...............just listen!!

Pups may be heard from 7 weeks onwards, but usually from 8 weeks.   They sound like tiny watches ticking away, if you are lucky you will be able to hear that they also sound slightly different, some like 'tick tick tic' and some like 'tock tock tock'   Takes a bit of practise to get the knack and you do need a co-operative bitch as has been mentioned

Personally I wouldn't have my bitch palpitated - IMO there's no point in messing her around for curiosity sake
