My weimy got struck down with bloat this afternoon...was all very sudden, by the time i realised what it was..what i was told on phone as i wasnt with him, when i reached him 30mins later he was in a state of collapse and cold, i raced him to the vet where they have spent the afternoon stablising him to be operated on- he is now in surgery and the next few hours are going to be hell.

Id appreciate hearing of people experiences of this...though i will ask not to hear of any resulting in death as i know this is a huge possibility and probably most likely outcome.

A friends Dane suffered from Blost recently, and she managed to get him to the vets asap, he was tubed ,and the stomach had'nt twisted, he has made a full recovery, on 4 small meals a day and was back in the ring last week.

Oh no I've no experience of this, just wanted to offer my wishes of a full & speedy recovery.

I do hope he makes a good recovery.  Yes I have been through this with my Eng Setter.  It happened one evening - I looked up his symptoms and suspected bloat.  We had to go straight and meet the out of duty vet at the main surgery some 12 miles away and he operated on him straight away.  He phoned up later to say that he was recovering well.  Our poor old dog was suffering from other problems as well - which is why he probabally drank too quickly causing the stomach twist.  We were very careful not to let him have too much at a time from then on.  He was eleven at the time.

One of my boys suffered a torsion 5 years ago. I got him to the vet before he had bloated. He had the op to untwist his stomach, the stomach was then stitched to the rib cage. He had a wound the size of China, but 5 years on he is wonderful. (He won a CC & BOB at a show just 6 months after the op)

My sisters bullmastiff had bloat very bad she woke in the night to find him like it rushed him to the vets but they can do wonders these days, they saved him, so keep positive x

A friend of mine popped back home at lunchtime to discover their dog was very unwell and suspected bloat.Vet operated and said it was touch and go,but luckily managed to operate in time.Recovery was fantastically quick and is once again looking great and doing well in the show ring.
Fingers crossed that it goes well.Thinking of you and the tremendous worry you must be going through.

Mason survived! He was very badly twisted along with his spleen, and had swollen up quite a lot and had gone into shock. My friends DDB bitch had it last week, she had given birth 3 days before and had started to swell, luckily there wasn't any food inside her and the tube let the air and liquid out.

Can I take your mind off the impending phone call and ask what surrounded the event? What he had eaten, his exercise that day etc please.

ok-vet has called, hes in too much pain so they are opening him up again- they suspect peritonitis or that his organs  are dying vet has warned me to expect a phonecall while hes on table so they dont have to wake him up to put him through more pain if its the worst

He has dry food down all the time- is a poor eater and NEVER eats a meal- just a few biscuits at a time. The last time he nibbled at the biscuits was friday evening. He was totally himself eating and drinking normal amounts. I took all the dogs for a long run on saturday lunch time- did his normal zoomies etc, the only slight change was that at the end of the walk he looked like he had had enough as he ran to the car- he doesnt normally do that. It was raining so i just put it down to that as hes a wuss!! (oh and he did a 4 poos, (all solid) when normally he only does 2 a day- always.
He didnt eat anything else on saturday but thats not unusual for him, went to bed everything normal. During the night he woke up and wandered round a few times where as normally he sleeps right the way through. But he wasnt showing any signs of distress or illness and quickly settled again.

Sunday morning he throws up a bit of foam- otherwise seems himself, so just suspected maybe a little tummy upset. Went for his walk as normal.
On returning he wanders round like hes going to be sick, but hes not. by this time it was about 12pm he then setlled down for a while and all seemed well.
At about 1.30 he gets up, has a long drink and throws up, then goes back for more and does the same. alarm bells started ringing. 5 mins later hes wandering around in and out of garden looking disorientated.
Within 2 more minutes he had collapsed, between then and me picking him up(40kg!) and carrying him to car his abdomen had distended horrendously.
The journey to the vets was 30mins- the worst of my life!
He was then put on fluids and a needle in his chest to releive pressure until he was stable enough for surgery, which he had 4hours of last night.

Sounds like it was a slow onset. With him being a picky eater, his stomach must shrink when hes empty and not eaten all day. Then drinking fills it up. Have you thought about feeding him wet? just to line his stomach even, and to help the pickyness. I wont get on the BARF train again ,but its something to think about.

Hope his tummy hasnt been too oxygen deprived.

he wont touch barf if it was the last thing on earth. If he survives this we will feed him wet probably.

Im struggling to understand the need for him to be opened up again, as surely any infection or damage cause wouldve been spotted last night in his op(he was on the table till gone midnight)

If it is peritonitis or he has damage, im wondering whether there is anywhere he can get specialist treatment to give him the best possible chance. I dont know whether im clutching at straws.

He was my dads dog before he died, he is so so dear to me and is just like a human in his behaviour. Its breaking my heart.

If tissue had died due to lack of oxygen they would have seen it when they opened him up, or even before as sometimes there skin can start to go black round the abdomen. Peritonitis is that blood poisoning?

I dont know why they would need to open him up again either. Maybe they did something wrong or missed it the first time?

The outcome for my girl (11yo, happened in June) wasn't successful, but I know of plenty that have had
success in dogs of all ages.

If I was faced with the same situation again I'd definately give my dog every chance.

peritonitis is infection of the perineum i think??

Hes being opened up by another vet, as the vet that operated originally is an emergency one.

I'm crossing my fingers for you. 
Peritonitis is an infection of the peritoneum, which is the abdominal cavity - it's usually caused by leakage from the intestine or stomach into the cavity.  If they didn't notice this when they operated yesterday and it has only just developped (it's usually a complication of surgery, anyway) that may be positive since time is of the essence with this infection. They usually flush out the cavity and then try treating with antibiotics.
I really hope that your dog will be OK.

They didnt manage to get him in to surgery...he has developed a life threatening arythmia on his heart and they are battling to stabalize him.
They are trying various drugs and he has had one cardiac arrest that they brought him out of. If he goes again theres nothing they can do.
They are gonna try one more drug and if that doesnt work, its up to his own body to help him get out of it.

the upside is they dont think he needs further surgery now as from that point there is improvement.

think the odds are against him now

I have no experience but I sincerly send best wishes and healing thoughts. He's been through a lot and is still fighting.

I have no advice to offer, sadly, but I just wanted to offer my support.  You must be beside yourself with worry   Having 2 large, deep-chested breeds, bloat is my worst nightmare.

so sorry to hear about your dog.  Fagan had torsion earlier in the year, it started on the Sunday morning with him acting strange - digging, nose licking - Sunday evening he was trying to be sick but nothing would come out, he also drank quite a bit but he didnt start blowing up until on the way to the vets on the Monday.  The vet he saw on Sunday didnt think it was bloat and gave him a painkiller injection Thank god my usual vet was there monday morning to operate.  The stitched his stomach to his side and removed his spleen.  It was touch and go for a few days but once he was home he made good progress, he is now back doing agility and running with us on the bikes

my boy has gone

I made the heartbreaking decision to have him pts earlier this afternoon. He was in agony, his organs were failing and he had given up the fight.
He had no chance of making it and to keep him going wouldve prolonged his pain. It breaks my heart as he went downhill so fast i couldnt get there in time to be with him for his final moments.

Ive now lost 2 young dogs in the space of 4 months. sometime i wonder why we put ourselves through owning dogs. Then i came home after burying him to cuddles and kisses from my other 2.

That is such a shame. I was hoping against hope that he would pull through. I have two breeds that are prone to bloat/torsion and the thought terrifies me but you made the right decision here and you did everything you possibly could for him. {{{{hugs}}}} Thinking of you

I'm so sorry to hear this very sad news you must be devastated   to lose two dogs so close together and so young is absolutley awful for you.  Most of us on here will have some idea how you must be feeling right now, but you did make the right and kindest decision for your boy although it must have been so very very hard
