my pup who is not yet 4 months old has neurological problems, we are soo upset right now but also unsure what to do i have been told to take her back to the breeder ,she is prob going to be put down 2moro as she has had this since birth unknown to us when we brought her, the breeder has said sorry but thats about all i feel real annoyed that we have this problem with a new puppy . advice please.

really sorry you have to go through this, i'm not a breeder but i'm sure people that are will give some advise soon.
i can't believe your breeder isn't helping you and doesn't sound like a very good one to me. i would of thought any reputable breeder would have taken the pup back and refunded your money, then made whatever decision needed for the pup themselves.
sorry i can't help much but i just wanted to say how sorry i am for you and your pup.

Thank you for your kind words, yes i thought i would do th eright thing and buy from a proper breeder who had greta bloodlines and knowledgeable about the breed etc, she in my opinion is not helping at all, my hubby has talked to her i was too upset to talk, hubby did say she did say get a 2nd opinion thtas it!! so i feel let down as i thought buying form a proper breeder would give me a better service? sorry if wrong word but cant` think anyay i really don`t know what to do,i want to get on the phone and tell her so much and tell her we should be refunded or something,i have childrne here who are going to be so upset 2moro ,i am sure there is nothing except to  put her down as she is showing no signs of a comeback!! we have tried to make her comfy etc..

If it was clear from birth she has has problems then i wouldnt have sold this puppy, its kinder to pts than let you and the puppy suffer. Be polite and explain to situation to your breeder, and say that you would be happy to get a refund of some amount to cover your losses and emotional distress. What condition has she got?

Was this condition apparent at time of purchase or when you first took her to the vet, if not then you can't really blame the breeder for selling what in law is a faulty product (horrible to think of a pup in those terms but that is how it is), but you should expect a refund as the pup has to be PTS, and was not 'Fit for Purpose' of being a pet.

I can understand though the breeder wanting an official expert opinion as they only have your say so so far.

So a report from a senior Vet or an outside expert opinion and send with copy with a letter recorded delivery to the breeder asking for a refund of the purchase price.

If you do not have a satisfactory reply you will be able to contact trading standards with the veterinary evidence.

As a breeder I would be most upset about the pups fate myself, but if I had done everything possible to ensure I bred healthy pups it would be one of those sad things that sometimes happens.  I certainly would be looking into both parents backgrounds, any incidents during pregnancy or rearing that might account for the problem, and take appropriate action.

Sorry but I dont find it clear just exactly what you want the breeder to do.

Have you actually asked the breeder just what it is you expect her to do?

thanks to all you who have replied, we didn`t realsie she had a problem til recently and yes will ask hubby to get a receipt or letter of some sort,i so wish i had acted sooner but then again how could i? i really hope this doesn`t happen to anyone else its heartbreaking even tho she hasnt` been with us long we did bond.

Dependant on breed, there circumstances that can bring on Neurological Disorders and may not necessarily be from the breeder.  I can understand why the breeder would want vet testing done, scans etc.  Illness that has been ignored, if a pup becomes dehydrated etc can all bring neurological problems in puppies, especially certain breeds.

I realise how upsetting this can be and if she is a good breeder then i am sure once you have proof of what is wrong, she will most definitely help  you more be it in help or monetary or to take the puppy back.

I'm really sorry to read about the heartbreak you are going through at the moment - it must be terrible for you and for your husband.

You say you bought your puppy from a good breeder - in which case the breeder would be as upset as you and your OH are - that's probably why she said have you had a second opinion.    Get the details from the vet in writing and get a copy sent to her as soon as possible.    Did both you and the breeder sign a contract when you bought your puppy?  If you have done so, then the breeder should adhere to that contract pretty quickly.

If you haven't signed a contract, and the breeder appears not to want to know, then you are going to have to go to the Trading Standards people and involve them - but I hope it doesn't come to that.

Did you insure her when you got her?

If you didn't notice the problem til recently then I doubt that the breeder would of known when they sold it?  I understand why they have aked for a second opinion as well.

Hopefully the person with the second opinionmay have a different view on what could be done?

I had a little bitch in a litter, small at birth that we stupidly looking back ( my mum and I ) started to top up at 4 weeks when her feeding started to slow,  she was often wet at her privates more than she should have been, another sign,  and being honest it was really on at 7 or 8 weeks I just knew something wasn't right , I had my suspicions and had already decided to keep her back for at least a month  ( she was even then only going to my mums as a pet) but by 8 weeks things started to show, very occasional stumpling, occasional funny eye movements and lose of weight.      I had her put to sleep at 10 weeks old.  It was hard decision but I knew it was the right thing to do. I , although the dogs are mine my little mum helps me so much she has a motherly imput :-)   she was determined to give her a chance.   I would have let it go at 8 weeks old but kept it going for my mother.  The day I got up and peaked in to see if she was still Ok was the day I had her PTS sadly.    It was just too much heartache that was only going to go one way eventually.

Sometimes things don't show their heads till after leaving the breeders.

I would have let it go at 8 weeks old but kept it going for my mother. When I say " let it go" I mean over the bridge not to a new home.   She was such a wee happy thing to , so loving but I knew not quite right.

My heart feels for you.  Such a very difficult decision for any responsible breeder.  You know that you did the right thing.  Doesn't make it easy though.
