Hi, on sunday my OH went and bought me some fruit and veg before he went back to work for the week. he bought a huge bag of economy bananas. there are 18 in the bag.
then today a neighbour knocked on my door and said her husband had brought lots of bananas back from work (he helps out on a fruit and veg stall sometimes) and handed me 20 odd bananas ha ha so now i have far too many. she had already handed some out to othere neighbours so i cant pass on the wealth myself :-)
im on a diet so im wondering if anyone has any good low fat recipes with bananas i can make so i dont waste them

Oh no, not more bananas, Asda were selling them for 38p a kilo, my OH kept buying huge bags which cost less than a pound, every time he went in store, which was quite often as I work there and he picks me up, he bought more!!

Don't forget that Bananas are expected to become extinct in the not so distant future :-(

Smoothies are great, Banoffie Pie, Pizzas w/ banana.
Give them to other friends or family or bake a pie and give that over?

I love Bananas

You do know that you can freeze bananas - just as they are?   Used in a smoothie, you'd never know!
Treat every stressful situation as a dog would. Pee on it and walk away

If you make any banana-caramel shortcake you can make sure you have enough to meet me at Delamere Forest & hand it over, when I'm down in that neck of the woods!   LOL!

Have you seen Economy Gastronomy?

Well on one episode they said you can freeze your bananas when they are getting a bit too rip and then use them for banana cakes when you're ready. I was rather sceptical but I've tried it and it works! So you could freeze some (in their skins) if you're struggling to use them all at once.

Is this true??

It was told to me by a Banana farmer in Oz a few years back. He was being serious, but thought to myself he may of been pulling my leg, so asked another farmer and he said the same thing.
Its something to do with a bug over in Oz, though not sure if its something that is seen in the Caribbean or not

The problem with the seedless edible bananas that we think of is that that they are unable to reproduce. All sweet banana plants are clones produced from cuttings taken from other banana plants.

In the 50's the variety available at the time was the Gros Michel and it was almost completely wiped out by panama disease. Luckily we had the current variety called the Cavendish as a stand by although it took time for it to be accepted. This modern variety is now under attack from both the panama disease and black sigotoka fungus.

We only manage to produce the amount of bananas that we do today with heavy spraying of pesticides, sometimes as many as 50 times a season. As the fungi become resistant to these the crops are being destroyed. Because of the lack of diversity in the banana plant they are unable to produce a defence on their own.

I doubt very much that the Cavendish will become extinct but it is likely that unless something changes it will be impossible to cultivate it on a large scale in the near future.

There are many other seeded varieties of bananas but these are not sweet and need to be cooked. GM may hold a key, crossing inedible varieties to produce a new sweet variety with this in mind scientists are mapping the banana genome.  Of course another alternative is for us all to adjust to a different type of banana.

There will still be bananas in the future but they will probably look and taste very different.

And if you get left with any that are past their best they're great in the aviary, my parrot and parakeets love em and the chooks too so send them this way :-)
