Hi

My 14 week cocker puppy sleeps in a crate he goes down OK but wakes up about 4 ish barking.   We have
been taking him out for his toilet and then letting him come in the bedroom with us and Holly our 20 month
old cocker spaniel. 

How can I get him to sleep later.   His last feed is at 7 and we take him out about 8.00 for his last walk
he is then asleep on the floor by 9.   When he comes through to the bedroom he just plays with our slippers
or a chew for about an hour and then goes to sleep until we are up at 6. 

I would welcome any points of views.

It sounds like he still needs out just before bedtime to relieve himself. My last pup had me up at about 2am right though 'til he was 6 months old and that was with last outings at 10.30 ish. He went out peed and went straight back to sleep. Never had that before, suppose some have weaker bladders than others.
Even now he still goes out to the garden more than any of the others.
Hope he settles down soon.

I too would take him out to the garden for a last wee at about 10.30 or 11 pm. Sleeping for about 5 or 6 hours is good going at that age - any longer is pushing it, and from what you say he's sleeping from 9 until 4 - that's 7 hours!

My little ( 6 month) pup sleeps by my bed and slowly she starts to whimper around 5am it works up to a palaintive cry by 1 minute past and then I know she needs out.
I pop her out and then straight back to bed - no communication except " good girl" when she's done and back to bed. I ignore her after that;
we're both getting used to it You are teaching the pup to 'ask' which is worth it's weight in gold.

It doesn't last for long, this stage, and will become a dim and distant memory....until the next one.

Agree with flattiemum.  You are expecting a lot at this age!

He's still a baby, and I wouldn't expect him to be able to go right through without a wee.  I think it's great that he is letting you know.

From 9pm to 4am is 7 hours a very good amount of time for a pup to sleep and hold itself.

My adults only used to sleep from 11pm until 7am, now they will go until 8 or so.

What time do you go to bed?  I would toilet and put pup to bed as late as you can.

Also letting pup come to your room to play after his 4am wee is rewarding.  You need to interact very little when you take him for his 4am wee, and put him back to bed.

Oh and learn to nap.....it's great for catch-up sleep and stops you from getting cranky

LOL  Yes, thanks tooolz.   I retired 18 months ago and we got Holly.  It was fine.
We have just got Sam and it is taking its toll!!!   But he's worth it!!! 
They both are.

I have a five month old GSP, I would feed him at 7.00pm and he would wake around 2.00am to be let out.

He has just settled down and now goes through the night untill 5.45am when I get up.

jve just retired and got a new pup,too,and i never get to sleep past 5 30!and shes 8 months now,!she doesnt need a wee either,she has chance to go out,but will hold  on for her first walk up to an hour later!still,i used to have to be up for work at 3 30,so i could look on it as an improvement,eh,good luck!!
