Hi there.  Could anybody recommend any really good nail clippers.  I have GSD who has very hard black nails.  I have the guillotine clippers which I have been really struggling with. He does not like them being done so anything that is sharper and quicker would be so much better. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Not quite the answer but I use a nail grinder. Brilliant.

Thank you, but that sounds a bit scary!

I had a dremel (rechargable one)but stopped charging soon after i got it (couldn't send it back as the dog had knocked it off its charged and nibbled it)

Oh bought me a pedipaws on off one of the home shopping chanels and its great, easier to use than the dremel as its got a little guard round the spinning drum that stops the hairs getting caught up.

Easy to do, and even the worst dogs I have came across now let me grind with no problem.

Loads of grooming places sell them, I bought mine from Simpson 8 years ago and still going strong. It has a label on it and I peeled it back ( ordinal dremel underneath)  so shop around for pricing if you fancy it.

An freind of mine, her 5 year old dog would not let her do his feet, I had them ground and pretty in  5 mins with little fuss.  Her face was a picture.

YIKEs it looks cheap here http://www.tvdeals.tv/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=362

Never tried this one but thought I would like it as Archiebongo has used it.

I prefer corded things as they never need charged :-)

Having one dog who hates her nails cut - and has very long hair - I've just ordered one of these (£3.90 inc. P&P from ebay, so has to be worth a try). Is it battery operated or rechargeable, Archiebongo? Couldn't see on the info. What breed do you have, hopefully something a bit bigger than a Chihuahua, or maybe it won't cope with mine!

Its battery operated (double aa's I think?)  I've got a very hairy Gordon Setter.

I found that when using the dremel, because there was no guard, his feathering often got caught up.  When the OH gave me it, i thought I'd humor him, but was surprised to find how good it was.

Blue - think that was around what he paid for it, as he said that he wasn't sure if it was what i wanted but for the price thought he'd try it. (You'd never guess that he has nothing to do with showing would you :-) ) I was going to get a corded dremel until he got me this.

We bought pedipaws and I found it not to be powerful enough for my Leo...
But as an idea and for smaller nails I think it would be great.
Took a long time to get my dogs nails down and the thing broke after few uses... got it from ebay and never heard back from the seller... Maybe it was a copy...

I use to have guillotine ones but found it hard to use on the small pets (rabbits and guinea pigs) so i switched to the sizzor type. I found it much eayser as the guillotine kept breaking the claws rather than cutting them properly.
This is the make i have.

I have a pet dremel that I bought on eBay from the US about 4 years ago. It takes 4 AA batteries (I use rechargeable ones). Still works as well as when I first got it. One of the best dog things I've bought :-D.

For those who have hairy dogs I've seen it recommended that you cut the foot part off a pair of thin tights and then put that over the dog's paw, poking holes for the nails to go through, so that the hair doesn't get caught up in the dremel.
