Hi, I have 2 beagle bitches one is 10 and the other is 2. They both seem to get along fine but do occasionally, fight normaly over food.

We have recently resuced another 18 month old beagle bitch  which we have now had for 2 weeks, but she and the older one seem to fight for now reason whatsover.
This has culminated in the older dog suffering a serious injury and a large vets bill.
I dont want to have to return the pup to a rescue shelter but am at my wits end and any suggestions would be gratfuly received.
Thanks
Alan

personally I would return the rescue dog maybe he would be better suited in a single dog home neither dog can be happy in this situation ..sooner the better for yourself and the dogs.

I always feed my 3 dogs seperately .. never had a problem with feeding but know from past experience years ago with two boys that food can cause many problems that would not normally occur once the bowls are removed.... its a happy house again.

I agree - it sounds as if the new bitch won't be happy until the older bitch is out of the picture; obviusly you won't be rehoming her, so can you (and she, more to the point) put up with this until she dies? If not, then I'd return the new one so that she can have a new home where the situation is more suitable for her; she might be fine living with a dog, but not other bitches.

Having had 2 bitches which would fight on contact(and having to rehome one) I have to say that I agree with the other 2 posters-this is very unlikely to get any better and unless you are prepared to keep these 2 bitches seperate for the next few years the best option would be to return the rescue bitch, sadly.

I could not put my old dog through all the worry of having another dog in the house and ready to fight her at any time.
As others have said she would be better in another home.
Let your old girl enjoy her life in comfort.

just a quick update seems  to  have completly settled down the new girl has be speyed and  touch wood  we have only had  one snarling session! They are still a  little wary of each other but are now laying side by side in front of the fire.Im still cautious especialy at feeding times.

I just hope this continues

i'm really pleased things are going well. Do make  sure you still keep an eye on them though as things can change very quickly for what seems like no reason.
i still keep my bitches apart at night and if i go out and mine play fight and get on pretty well these days but i'm always aware that this could change so would rather be safe than sorry.
great news though and hopefully things will settle right down over time.
