i was in the vets today waiting to be seen and got talking to another rott owner.
she told me loads about her and her dog ect but what got me to thinking was she said she'd had her dog hip scored but hadnt registered it as the (not our vets) vet told her it would be and extra 60 quid.
is it true you can have a dog hip scored but not register it wiv the BVA?
i didnt want to sit and disbelive the lady so sat and nodded but i didnt think it was possible i thought it automatically got registered??

You can have it x-rayed but not SCORED. The scoring is only done if the plates are sent off with the extra fee.

Its £40 to get the BVA vets to actually read and score your dogs the results of which are sent to the KC and your vet first with the KC usually having the results available online before you get them from your vets.

Some people don't send their x-rays up if they're likely to get a terrible score.  Vets & owners are under no obligation to send up their x-rays, there is no regulations saying that you have to score a dog's hips once x-rayed.  Personally I would send my plates up however bad they were as I feel that it is for the good of the breed to find out these things.  Then again, I've been incredibly lucky with my hipscores being well below breed average.

Many years ago our first homebred Champion was X-rayed, and the vet advised us not to send the plates in as they didn't look good, in their opinion.  Like Maddog, we felt that it was wrong to skew the average for the breed as a whole, so we sent them in anyway.  The plates came back with a total score of 8, well beneath the breed average.
I wouldn't trust the opinion of anyone other than the specialists that actually do the scoring.  Some vets might know what they're looking for on the plates, but equally some don't.

BVA results are very slow getting to the KC but if you receive your copy before it is on the KC health forum then you can photocopy them and send them to the KC yourself for their web site. There have been problems getting the results from the BVA to the KC for some time but this is in part due to work being carried out at the BVA headquarters.
