I know some of you have the stuff and after the wet weather and now the mud my OH has decided he would like it, probably next year, the only trouble i have is that when i think of it i have an image in my head of really bad looking fake stuff, so any recomendations or advice will be truely welcome XXX

This is my fake grass, the dogs love it - it's clean, never needs cut and I think it looks ok. The only problem I've had is that it's glued on concrete slabs and had came loose a little, causing it to wrinkle. You can see this on the video. I've fixed it now

I got mine from the 'as good as grass' people. I'm delighted with it, it's been down about 3 years now but I'm not sure I would actually recommend them as their service wasn't great!

We are hoping to put down fake grass next spring - there is some very realistic stuff on ebay, with different shades and length of the blades of grass available to suit your needs or preference. My only concern is what our pet rabbits who are allowed to exercise in the garden will do with it lol.

They'd have to be kept off it - I'm not sure what it's made of but would do them no good if they chewed it!

Not sure they would chew it - or try to dig in it since they never dig where my childrens play area is (bark chippings down with that black canvas type stuff you put under it to stop weeds coming through). They only dig in soil.  Needless to say though, I am not careless enough to leave them unattended and risk their health in any way. If any attempts were made to chomp on it, they would have to go in the exercise pen (on flagged area).
I think you do have to be careful what stuff you buy though - it is worth paying a little extra, since I know someone with fake grass and it honestly looks like the top of a snooker table - exactly the same colour and just as flat (very practical with dogs though !)

Well thanks for the replys, will let you know if i ever get it (OH comes up with these brain waves but never does them) i will miss cutting the grass in the summer though, (i know im strange) i love the smell of cut grass.

No there is nothing strange about liking the smell of cut grass, I know exactly what you mean ! But then again I don't enjoy mowing it so I will just enjoy the smell of other people's cut grass without the bother of having to get out a lawnmower.

Can I ask what artificial turf goes down on? I know you would need a level surface and some sort of membrane to keep weeds away but does it need sand too for drainage? Our garden is very muddy now and we need to do something about it and have been thinking about artificial turf or chuckies. Our grass is level with the path and patio but higher than another patio are so will need edging but I was wondering about drainage.

I'm not really sure but I think you just put down the stuff that I referred to another post to stifle weed growth - ensuring the soil beneath is flat and then fix the artificial grass onto that. I also know that you can buy a type that can go straight down onto concrete paving (so I am assuming it has more cushioning).

We had to dig out to about 8'' deep, lay hardcore, compact it, then sand, and compact again, before laying the grass on top.  Not a quick or easy job, but well worth it!
