got a 2 year old pet border collie. fed on complete biscuits (Burns high energy mix) and mixed with pilchards or tuna in sunflower oil. has a perfectly clean incisors and canines but his molars at the back are looking a little brown in the crevices. he will not in any way shape or form let you brush his teeth, or eat just dried food. have tried it, went a week without eating, so figured that just wasnt going to work. was just wondering what is the best way to remove tartar in this case, or whats the best product to use that go on his dinner or tablet or liquid.
i know he's "only a pet" and his breath isn't smelly but i would rather get on top of this now rather a year down the line where descaling by a vet is needed. his diet is the same as the leonbergers who is only a little younger, but his teeth are pearly white, so figured it was probably not dietry issue but more the way he chews his food.
any ideas, would be very grateful
xx

I'd say raw meaty bones from the butcher -nice and tasty, all natural, and does the trick. :-)

Boneo treats?  Not sure if they really do work, my vet has always recommended them though.

I can't remember who told me but they said anything that takes less than 15 minutes to eat will do nothing to clean the teeth. Those Dentastix for example, 5 seconds flat. Don't even touch the teeth let alone clean them LOL

Shame about the bones as they are really the best for cleaning teeth

Mine are quite partial to a PAH tripe stick or two! depending on the size of the beastie, they could last a while (Mine scoff em down in 30 sec's...which is quite a long time for Merlot the Merla"croco"dile!!) PAH olso do "Paddywack" I think it's a dried tendon, very very hard and I don't give to my big beasties as they snap bits off but good for a smaller dog I expect. Mine get lots of raw lamb ribs and beef brisket bone so no problems with toothypegs, but I know some get pretty yucky!! My friends JRT has pretty awfull teeth but we are working on it with the odd bits and pieces I chuck over the fence for her LOL took her nearly and hour to chew her way through a lump of raw ox heart this morning for her brekkie!!! even the cat wanted a chew on one corner!! ;-) ;-)

I'm too much of a wuss to give my dog a bone to clean his teeth, I am convinced he would chew large chunks off, swallowing them whole or snapping his teeth (he is a very hard chewer and a complete pig :-( ).
I give him a rope toy to chew on, he really enjoys knawing on the big knots, I'm sure it helps clean his teeth (has to be better than nothing), however they don't last long and he has to be supervised because he'll munch his way through them, eating all the threads that come loose.

Plaque off is ment to be good so I was told? anyone used it?
By Sawheaties (**) [gb] Date 11.11.09 19:44 GMT
I've used Plaque Off, ok with two of mine but gave the third the "runs". I like Fragaria. Interestingly all four of mine are fed the same but the condition of the teeth vary, the puppy and the oldest (10 and a half!) having the best teeth. I suppose they are like humans, some of us have pearly whites and some of us not!

I use plaque off on one of ours on the advice of our vet whose wife was using it on her dog - it really does seem to be making a difference - you only need a little so though the tub lasts ages.

I bought the largest tub at Cruft's a couple of years back.  Didn't do a thing for my two elderly Beardies.

I've just had a complete dental done on a very tiny Long Coat Chihuahua dog.  His mouth is so tiny, that even a cat toothbrush won't reach the back teeth.  My vet said that he wouldn't get to the back teeth unless the dog was under GA and appreciates the problem I'm having.

As cat toothpaste is 4 times stronger than the canine version, I'm using that, and just trying to rub as much as possible around the mouth with my finger.  As the vet has given me a "clean" mouth to work on, I really want to do my best.  There is some liquid that my vet has tried with one of his terriers, I assume it's fairly new.  You put it in the water.  I've asked him to order me some - will post the name when it arrives, and let you know how things go.

The vet said that you put it in the water bowl, and it does leave a film on the bowl.  Not a problem, they wash easy enough.

I am on a breed specific forum and many people on there swear by that stuff. I have never used it myself but have been thinking about it after reading the results that thay have had with it.

I have used the spray and also the gel and find it well worth the money.

Thanks for that :-)

As my boy can't even get his lips round a bone, I'll try anything.  To have it recommended is a bonus.

Have just ordered it online.  Thanks Gill.

My crowd have CSJ seaweed and parsley mix.  I got it a couple of years ago as my oldest dog (then 3) was starting to show a bit of browning on her molars.  It did the trick and all the others are on it too and all got lovely gnashers!

My two are on Plaque Off at the moment. They have been using for 2 weeks now and can see the difference already. It seems to loosen the plaque, I just scraped with a finger nail and some came off.
