Probably a couple of years ago my westie Lucy was diagnosed with an itchy skin condition. I seem to remember the vet prescribed Malaseb. It seemed to fade away and she has been okay since although she suffers with arthritis - she is 10 years old.
However she seems to have had a recurrence of the skin conditon. Her coat seems greasy and has a "mousey" smell. Today she has been to the groomer's but still has the smell. Also she has been biting her tail which is sore.
The groomer said she wondered if I had changed her food lately - I have, she has the small bite Bakers dried food mixed with a bit of Butcher's tripe. Before that she was on JWB - but likes the Bakers much more. Do you think the food could be causing it? And should I put something on her sore tail?
I know skin problems are quite common in westies so any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Snowflake
Possibly malassezia, a yeast infection very common in Westies with sensitive skin.
Bakers is full of sugars and colourings and certainly wouldn't be helping. A BARF diet generally helps, or if you don't want to do that, then Wafcol salmon & potato or Vegetarian sometimes helps.
And hand stripping rather than clipping also improves the skin as it removes dead coat rather than cutting it.
