Hi, I'm looking after my little lad's daddy at the moment.  He's a drop dead gorgeous border collie with a heavy coat and a big, classic rough.  He's currently wearing a 1" webbing collar, which is what all my dogs wear so I don't have a problem with these.  However, the big lad keeps getting knots under his chin where the collar sits ... His boy isn't quite as hairy as dad, so the webbing collar is fine.  I seem to recall someone mentioned a rolled, leather collar wont create the tangles, can anyone confirm?  Presumably owners of Rough Collies must have a similar problem?  Thanks for any suggestions.

I own both BCs and Roughs and use Rolled leather collars on all.

For Amy my Rough Collie I have one of those rope leads with the ring on the end which loops through and acts like a choke lead . I keep it loose for pavement walking then when in the field shes off the lead. I dont use it unless when shes out so in the garden and the house shes no collar on.

I use round leather and chain half check collars on all of mien they are supposed to have a thick ruff, but dint have long enough hair for the outer coat to tangle.

but if she bolted (from fear or something)she would not have the collar and tag she is legally required to have when in public, and would be less easy to identify and return to you.

Yes, I agree that a rolled leather collar would be best. Perhaps using a normal collar just for walks and the rolled leather collar for indoors. This is what I do with my lurchers where normal collars would rub their fur off if worn all the time.

My Rough Collie always wore a rolled leather slip collar.

i also use a rolled leather half check on my flattie.

i tried several types of collar before this but have found it to be the best.  Mostly because it leaves no mark in his lovely coat.

Traditional hand stitched (rather than glued) rolled leather I've found to be the kindest to thick manes and long coats.  They also wear longer if well made and correctly maintained.

I also like to use the same type of leather for rolled slip collars and also slip leads.  Providing the ring for the slip is a suitable size (i.e. not too big!) then the hair wont catch, tangle and break.

Hi, thanks for all your replies.  I think it sounds like the rolled, leather collar is what's needed for the big boy!  Looked at the hemp collars, they're really nice, not come across them before ... will take a look at those again when the rest of the gang need new collars.  Just have to get the rolled collar and work out how to attach an ID tag - I only do the flat against the collar type, don't like danglies!

I attach the tags to one of the rings at the side of the collar, not the ring on the centre of the chain that the lead attaches to.
