I was laid up in bed for 3 days a few weeks ago, and it struck me that despite having 4 very fit, active border collies, they are all quite chilled and laid back if I'm struck down ill ... when I'm in bed!  However, if I'm ill on the sofa, as I was (3 days and nights), they seem to think that sofa equates to lazy git, bed is where you go to die!! 
I just wondered what other people do to entertain their dogs when you feel like dying and you have no one else to entertain them for you and can't take them out on walks?

When i was ill a few weeks back i stayed on the sofa with our Boston Terrier she didnt move from my side,she is usually a active two year old so i think she knew i was ill but the Boxer pup was another story the complete opposite worse than usual because the Boston would 'nt  play,my other half had to take a week off work and take her to his dads and stay there with her luckily he is only down the road but i just couldnt cope with a 3 mth old pup launching herself at me at least i lost a stone and a bit in weight! but still wouldnt wish being ill on anybody. debby

I was sick all last week and all 5 of us were on the bed having naps, trips out for them to pee and trips to the loo for me to throw up. They didnt mind one bit.

I had a hysterectomy in June, all mine just spent the day taking turns on the bed with me, even 6 month old pup who's normally very bouncy took her turn chilling on the bed. My dogs are very in tune with my mood, which is why they are all looking expectantly at me right now as I am thinking about going for a takeout and they all fancy a ride in the car LOL

i had a spine op in april and was very wobbly on my feet. as part of my daily exercise i had to walk up the garden, my 4 legged guardian angel, in the form of a 12 month leonberger, used to walk up with me, by my side and everytime i would wobble he would stand still and allow me to pull myself back to balance using his scruff.

My dog does not take much entertaining now he's out of his puppyhood, he is more than happy sprawled on the sofa - as long as he has company.

I've been feeling rather ill (flu like) for the past 2 weeks, the first few days of that I had a temp of 102, but still dragged myself out to walk the dog (OH offered, but I'd rather do it myself, as he doesn't pay much attention to whats about). I had started to worry about him (the dog), as since I've felt ill, he has been very quiet and when out on a walk, just trudged along beside me, he even decided he wanted to go home before our route was finished a couple of times. But since I've been feeling better, he has perked up, back to his usual self on walks I am sure he had quitened down due to me being ill and with hind-sight see he would not have minded if he didn't have a walk for a few days.

I don't go to bed when I'm ill, I stay on the sofa, so the dog still gets his usual attention (he doesn't go upstairs), - he likes his 'hand' to be held while he goes to sleep, bless

Pretty much the same as everyone else, the dogs can tell when I'm feeling ill and they are good lovely dogs then. It's amazing how little Vic wants to go out into the garden when I'm ill, usually it's a different story and I have to let him out a million times a day, Missy the other dog is a lazy thing either way so I forget she's about sometimes.

When I had Flue for 3 weeks still walk the dog for 2 miles then sat on the sofa in the afternoon and he sat next to me. Have always gone out when ill but having an op in january cannot walk for 2weeks other half taking dog out but that will really worry me while he out.

I was really ill last Christmas for a week.  The dogs were just fantastic, the most I could do was open the back door and they played out happily all this time. 

It is easier when you have more than one as I used to have between 5 and 7 collies through the 30 years I had them and yes they do then play and keep each other occupied but with one they rely on you so much for everything and it is not easier when you are ill.

I was realy impressed to read what Tanya1989 said about her dog. What a fabulous Leo, what devotion.

Spent a day in bed about two weeks ago and Whistler slept with me, moved when I did went off for the odd pee and spent the time tucked between my knees very restful.
Made a change having someone to talk to!!
In a house hold of men the dog gave me some comfort when I needed it, not when asked for!

awwww thanks gaby. he is my hero. ive never had a bond with anybody, even the OH or any other dog the way our bond is. my mccartney is an angel

well i was not ill,but when i was in labour my two pugs followed me around with every contraction and would not leave my side till i left for hospital,also when i was pregnant and the baby was kicking,my pugs would paw my belly and rest their heads on it,bless them

A year ago, I was very ill for 10 days. The first 5 days I couldn't move from the sofa/bed at all, just about managed to feed the dogs and other animals. I couldn't walk the 4 dogs of course either. But strangely, none of them were a problem at all! Three of them I knew would be fine for almost any length of time without exercise, but one of them (a saluki) normally goes up the walls if he hasn't had a walk two days running! But he was chilled out, not a bother at all.
After 5 days a friend came with me to walk the dogs, just to give them a good run, which they had. Then it was another 5 days unable to exercise them! And again, they were all absolutely fine including the saluki.

I recently couldn't walk them for two days for other reasons, and sure enough, the saluki started pacing and messing indoors towards the end of day 2... So I think he knew last year that I wasn't well and just adjusted to that, whereas during a normal routine, he wouldn't be able to.

I was ill a few weeks ago and basically took to the sofa and my lovely Cocker thought it was brilliant as I usually work.  However, when he realised that I wasnt going to be much fun he turned delinquent and went through all the bins when I was asleep, ate a brand new toilet roll and then was attempting to get in to the kitchen cupboards when I busted him!

what confused me is that he usually spends a lot of time on his own and just sleeps until I get home so why he decided it was OK for him to trash the house as I was home is beyond me!!
