Hi we have had our little puppy vaccinated for rabies for holidays abroad she was just about 3 months, soon afterwards I noticed she had a lunp on her neck and just thought she had been bitten by a tick as we live near fields and she is in and out as you can imagen. we took her for the results and she was antibody negative for rabies, we had also noticed white lumps on her upper lip the vet thinks she has puppy strangles.she seems so normal and happy. my concern is will she have antibodies for her other puppy injections and could this be linked to the rabies injection supressing the immune systen??

Hi Eddiedom,

We had a pup once with puppy strangles but it developed around 5 or 6 weeks of age. I am not 100% certain but I dont think it affects older puppies just very young pups. From what I remember of this conditiong, it is something to do with the immune system. I dont know a lot about rabies jabs as have never taken a dog overseas it may be a reaction to this vaccination. I can remember with the pup we had with Strangles I first noticed the inside of his  ear felt swollen, the vets werent sure what it was and gave me some drops. He didnt get any better and I was of course very worried as our vets who are normally excellent were baffled? Then he started getting some spots, almost boil like on his nose and chin. It was only then that the vets found out what it was he had, poor little chap. They gave us a course of anti biotics and steroids..he was quite poorly for about a week then started to pick up. Thank fully he made a full recovery and turned into a very handsome dog.  I dont ever remember any white lumps any spots/lumps he had were quite red and angry looking. Personally from what you have described it doesnt sound like strangles? One other thing I remember with this pup that has just come to mind, his glands in his neck and in his hind quarters were very swollen.

Another name for teh condition is Puppy Head Gland disease and the swollen glands is a classic part of it.
