I've now got a border terrier puppy. I got her from a KC breeder a couple of weeks ago when she was 12 weeks old. Today she had her 2nd vaccination and the vet also gave me advantage spot on, to be followed 5 days later by milbemax. I'm a bit concerned that its all a bit too much for a 15 wk old puppy and I just wonder if the advantage at this time of year is necessary. Puppy has been wormed with Drontal every 2 wks by breeder.Has anyone experienced ill effects in their dogs from advantage.? I find it all quite worrying especially after what i experienced with my last girl.
Any advise please

If I understand right Advantage is for external parasites, and I would not be putting it on a puppy that did not have them.
I certainly would be worming the pup monthly until 6 months of age.

Oops. Should have read Advocate ! Sorry, thought vet said advantage.

That's even worse as that tackles worms, and they have given you another wormer too????

Advocate doesn't tackle all worms, which is why another wormer is required.

I get these flea treatments mixed up, which is it that does the lot?

None of them that i'm aware of, Advocate covers all worms and fleas apart from tapeworm i think.

Advocate doesn't do tape worm but DOES do lungworm, of the others they do worms except lung worm, apart from one (can't remember which but it takes several doses to work)
Chris
just noticed you were asking about flea not worms, -ooops
>I get these flea treatments mixed up, which is it that does the lot?
None, unfortunately. Some do fleas, mites (including earmites) and roundworms, but not ticks or tapeworms. Some do fleas and ticks, but not worms of any sort.

There is definately one that covers worms, fleas, lung/heart worm and mange, it has a diferent name in the USA to here.
I think it is Revolution in USA.
Found it it is Stronghold in the UK.

I spoke to the breeder last night. She was a little more than surprised at my vet prescribing the advacate, she thought it far too strong for a 15wk old puppy, and also felt Milbemax was wrong as well. Felt that Drontal or Panacur far more suitable. So I'll leave both and just continue with Drontal until puppy is older.

Stronghold doesn't do french heartworm (lungworm) or tapeworms. There are no treatment that covers fleas and all types of worms. If there was they would make a fortune but unfortunately as yet no company has found a way to combine both types of treatment successfully.
We use milbemax in puppies all the time with no ill effects.
