i am qualified to microchip small animals.when i went on the course i was advised to only microchip puppies over 8 weeks of age.but for small puppies to wait til 12 weeks as well as kittens 12-16 weeks.well my question to you is (perfect if there are others who chip)what age would you chip say a large breed puppy and what age would you microchip a small breed puppy?

lets say lab??

and say ermm lol....pom.??

i have a lady wanting a small breed puppy chipped and hubby told her to call back later as i was out with dogs.she told him all about this tiny puppy but hes only 8 weeks.what would you say?id feel sorry for him and recommend she wait til at least 12 weeks but is it just me being a pansy about things???lol

I have my litters done at 6 weeks, (Labs) this also gives time for pups to settle again before the next trauma of moving to new home..

ok thank you.but if your puppies were a toy breed would you still chip them at this age or wait?

to be fair, I have no idea of the size or weights of toy pups, so cannot really say, but I do feel that I would wait, 6week old labs can weigh between 6 & 8 Kilos.. toys only weigh a few lbs.. there is no comparison.. someone with knowledge of small breeds will be along soon :-)

We are all going to have differing opinions.  I don't have Chihuahuas done until I take them in for their 6 month puppy health check.

I do my Malinois at 6 weeks and my kittens at 10 to 11 weeks -making sure the microchipping is in between the first vaccination (9 wks) and the second (12 wks) for the kittens. I've done a Papillon at 8 weeks but here I'd say a lot should depend on size of the pup.
