My friends' has asked me to post as she is unsure what to do. She thinks her dog may have a bit of a treat stuck somewhere in his throat. He is eating ok but coughs sometimes like an old man trying to clear his throat, apart from going to the vets is there anything she could do? He doesn't have the 'cough' all the time and like i said is still eating as normal, he maybe does once and hour or so, she would be very grateful for any info.
Could it be kennel cough? Is he bringing up white phlegm?
No, he doesn't bring up anything.

Couldn't be heart, could it? That brings a cough much like that. I can't see any way a treat could be stuck?
Marianne. Dogs are not our whole lives, there are cats too!

A small piece of bread smeared with honey is usually recommended if a dog has something stuck in its throat. If that doesn't help then it's worth getting the vet to check. There are several reasons for a cough, some serious, some not.
A closed mouth gathers no feet

SOUnds like KC or heart problems to me more than a treat stuck. Vets should be the first point of call.
If I wanted a Poodle, OES, TT or IWS I would have bought one. SWD's shd. be natural and rustic. No
> bread smeared with honey
Thanks that is a good one to remember.
Home has hairs on the sofa
I would take the dog to vets just be sure. As an occasional 'old man' cough was the first sign of a heart murmor in one of my previous dogs.
Does he cough when he wakes up from a sleep?
It could be KC, but like you say could also just be a bit of a treat stuck, however if he is still eating it is unlikey that it will be a serious obstruction.
My springer passed a whole luminous green tennis ball casing this morning, god knows when he decided to eat it. Its amazing what they pick it, sometimes things get lodged and sometimes they make thier way out the other end.
A trip to the vet would be your best bet.

Sounds very similar to Zuma when he started Lungworm, if (sorry,
when)your friend goes to the vets get them to specifically ask about it, its not spread that much in some areas and vet may not think of it straight off.
