Hi everyone, my 1 year old BMD called London is very fussy and refuses to eat his dry dog food unless I mix something in it, but after while he gets bored again and I have to find something different to mix on it. Well, today I decided to mix a bit of tripe with his food and he went crazy! jumping up and down as if what the most delicious food in the world not to mention that I am new to tripe and I decided to cook it in the microwave (OMG! what a big mistake!) that thing stinks so bad that I almost had to throw up, (LOL) but London was still going nuts about it and ate the whole thing with a big satisfying look in hes face. Anyways... after spending hours of my day trying to get rid of the awful smell of tripe, by cleaning the microwave with white vinegar and buring lots of incence LOL, I would like to know if I can mix this stuff raw with his dry food as I don't want to make the same mistake in cooking it Can you please help me on this? My dog has raw tripe mixed in with his dry complete food (well, it's not dry as I soak it in water, but that makes no difference to the tripe) and has done since a pup. He loves it.

Oh and you soon get used to the smell of tripe. My kids used to heave when we first got the dog and I had tripe defrosting in the fridge, but they are so used to it now they don't even comment

ETA, just checking - you are using tripe from a pet shop/dog food company and not a Butchers aren't you? As tripe from a Butchers (thats fit for human consumption) has no nutritional value to the dog as it has been washed & bleached, unlike the 'green' tripe intended for dogs, it's unwashed, unbleached and brimming with goodness.

Thanks for your fast reply, shock?! yes!! and after all my effords I still smell the  thing LOL, I just want to see my husbands reaction when he gets home from work LOL and regards the rest of the tripe, I guess London will have to eat it outside

ah! yeah! I am using tripe from a supermarket that comes frozen 400g I think is the green one coz doesn't look bleached at all

I mix raw tripe with my springers complete (AG). He gets it a few times a week with his evening meal. I started giving it him as a way of getting a bit more weight on him. It has worked a treat and he loves it.
No problems the other end either and he is prone to a sensitive stomach (has a chicken and wheat intollerance)

The smell is hideous when raw. But when cooked it is about 100 times worse!
I would keep it raw as cooking it doesnt make any difference only to the smell of your house!

I use prize choice as i can get it easily, have read differing oppinions on it. But i dont have the freezer space to store wholesale amounts of a different (possibly better) brand.

We get our tripe from www.naturesmenu.co.uk they are fantastic and deliver. They do a wide range of tripe variations, they do frozen nuggets which are tripe mixed with liver, fruit & veg as well as lamb and rosemary but you can only get these online. They dont smell as much as the plain tripe although I must be used to the smell now as I dont find it all that offensive but our dogs just love it.

I cooked green tripe in the microwave once - eeeew!     It took ages to get rid of the smell, but cutting a whole fresh lemon in half and microwaving it for a minute or so really helped, but i used a few lemons before the house smelled right

long time ago with first dog i was advised to use tripe and it must be cooked I reckon they saw me coming, cant tell you how long I managed to cook the stuff (months) before deciding it wasn't making any difference to her pancreatitis.
I can still smell the stuff now ! thank god we found raw feeding. Anyway it was chappie complete that suited her best lol 

lol must say iv had a giggle at this as many moons ago i to was told "yeah tripe your dogs will love it, you gotta boil it tho" lol ,
And of cause i did just that , never forget the day nither did my mum the whole house stank of it, lol.

i mix raw tripe with my dogs dry complete food iv always put a little something in it mine love cooked chicken so if i go to the shabby butcher in my high street where they sell 3 chickens for a 5'er i will grab them boil them up and mix some in without the bones , i think it just a bit of a taster for them really and they love it they get all excited when they smell chicken boiling or meat and tripe when i bring it home ,

Tip for getting rid of the smell - wipe the inside of the microwave with a damp cloth with bicarb of soda.

i used to feed mine tripe but it didn't agree with my girls waist line, but they loved it.

My boys get tripe with chicken/beef or plain old tripe which I buy frozen. They get it probably 2-3 times a week, 1 block shared between two, mixed in with their complete meal. I did it at first to put weight on the oldest lad who was a very skinny teenager, but it keeps their coats looking good. I just pour boiling water over it (yes, stinky!) and mix it in--they love their hot school meals . Also very keen on the Prize Choice rabbit!
