The only problem we had was if he ate a bit of chicken that had been dropped by the kids/cat, within 2 hours he would be rubbing his face along the floor, trying to itch his ear

Failing that, if your vet is still reluctant to do further tests, I'd ask for a referral to a Dermatologist.
