HI All,

Can somebody point me in the direction of the rules as far as breeding from a bitch with entropion.
In a nutshell I am aware of somebody wishing to use a bitch that has had an operation to correct this, I need to clarify whether or not they are allowed to.

There are no rules about breeding from any animal. Whether it's morally, ethically, or medically right is another matter entirely.

Entropion is generally considered to be hereditary, so a responsible breeder wouldn't do it.

If the person proposing to breed from an affected bitch is a member of the breed club, then it may be worth checking breed club guidelines/requirements regarding this  

Some breed standards specifically state  "free from entropion" so in those breeds it is likely to be a known problem.

Unfortunately they are the Chairman and this is the latest questionable practice.

I couldn't agree more! I don't want to go on moaning ( well all right a bit) but he tried to line breed her back to her grandfather who isn't even a particularly good dog. IMHO.
I am so angry as he also "forgot" to tell the KC the bitch had been operated, so now we are waiting to see what they do-BUT he is a KC member so I won't hold my breath.

Surely as Chairman of the breed club he should be setting an (good) example for others?

At the moment the KC are trying to prove that they are encouraging good breeding, so they may take a dim view of this practise, and it could be said that by doing this he is bringing the breeding of dogs and his breed in particular into disrepute

"Entropion is a painful and potentially blinding disease and therefore affected dogs in breeds that have a high incidence of entropion (such as Bloodhounds, Chow Chows, English Bulldog, Bull Mastiff, Chinese Shar Pei, Mastiff, Vizsla, and Saint Bernards) are denied certification. (CERF NOTE: As of November 2001, entropion is breeder's option for Bloodhound, Bulldog, Bull Mastiff, Mastiff, Saint Bernards.) However, because exaggerated facial conformation with loose skin and/or heavy facial folds often leads to eyelids that roll in or out predisposed the animal to irritation, discomfort and possible vision loss, selecting away from these traits in all breeds is strongly encouraged. "

So I would say a resounding no to breeding from an affected animal, a sibling or parent is another matter, assuming the affected was a one off in the litter, if considering siblings, and that the parents had not produced it before/since.
