Hi, am looking after a bitch for someone, noticed the red discharge today, so having only had boys, could someone advise me how long the season is likely to last from day 1 of red discharge, and when is she able to go back out walking?
Hilda

The average season lasts 21 days from the first sign of red blood, and although the usual fertile period is from day 10 to day 16 (when the discharge often becomes paler and more straw-coloured), she could be fertile any time between day 3 and day 20. So no walks where other dogs go for three weeks.
What a rotten thing to happen to you - how long have you got her for?
A closed mouth gathers no feet
Okay thanks for that! We have got her until March now - the owner went on holiday to Australia, was due back in Oct, but was taken ill and is unable to fly back until further notice!
Oh blimey Hilda - what a performance for you - and poor owner - hope s/he is better soon.
Will you manage to keep her separate from your boys ok?
Treat every stressful situation as a dog would. Pee on it and walk away
Hi! Well, she is upstairs now, and they are downstairs! No problem keeping them separate, just hope nobody starts continual howling or something!! I thought she was being very flirty with Cody yesterday, and again this morning - I mean she does play with him normally, they get on great, but this was definitely flirting!! My friend has given me some tablets to give her, supposed to take the smell away - don't know if they work, but can't do any harm, so I'll give her two a day.
You can get pants for bitches in season, that you can use for short amounts of times if you get really stuck, not used them myself!

Bitch pants are for keeping blood away from the floor and furniture, they will NOT protect against a male mating.
Marianne. Dogs are not our whole lives, there are cats too!
Sorry i didn't know that, thanks for putting me right!
