Whats the timescale for worms to mature inside a dog. Specifically pups from birth to 8 weeks, whenever i have wormed my pups its been with panacur for 3 consecutive days and ive never seen worms in stools, done at 2 5 and 7 weeks. Would this routine not allow worms to mature at all? Plus my dogs are wormed at regular intervals.

Reason i am asking is that a friend of mine had a litter and didnt take my advice to use panacur and used drontal, pups have had worms present at, at least one worming session not 100% sure of her routine of worming. One of the pups went on sunday (he was wormed a day or two before he left) and owners rang today to say that he had worms in his poo. They were also had pretty bloated tums when i went to see them on sunday. Has the wormer failed? are the worms we see in poo adult worms, new owners also said there was quite alot in his poo. So the rest of the litter would it harm them to do them again in a week to make sure they are worm free. I dont think they have been done correctly so i hope she will get the panacur next time.

Any one use drontal to worm pups from birth, is it just a single dose?

I use Drontal puppy wormer, single dose each time, liquid through syringe, at 3 weeks, 5 weeks and 7 weeks.  I've never seen any worms.

I do use Drontal Plus on the dam at the same time but apart from when rearing pups, then my adults get no chemical wormers at all just garlic.

And mum will be picking up worms while cleaning pups bums.

I've had the exact opposite experience. For my first litter I used Panacur and every time there were masses and masses of worms in the poo. After that I heard too many stories of pups dying from panacur so I've only ever used Drontal and never seen worms again. But I believe with Drontal the worms are broken down inside the animal and so don't come out whole.

This is the reason all my dog s get wormed when the pups go, whether they are due to be wormed or not.

Perhaps your friend didn't worm often enough as the Drontal appears to be needed every two weeks.

I have never seen worms in any of my litters or adults for that matter.  Only ever seen them in a rescue litter that a friend was rearing and they were very bad.

I have only ever used Panacur, and I worm pups just the twice before they go at 3 1/2 and 7 weeks, because I had problems when I did them 3 times, but I have done generations of bitches in whelp, so suspect very low levels encysted for transmission.

Pups are then done at 11 weeks and monthly until 6 months of age.

We worm all in whelp bitches from day 42 of being whelp until two days post whelping with panacur.   The pups are wormed at 2, 5, 7 weeks of age then fortnightly up to 12 weeks then monthly until 6 months of age (with panacur).   After that the adults are wormed routinely every 3 months with drontal plus.  Have on occasion had to use panacur weekly on a litter of pups that had giardia, and on another occasion when one litter were passing worms (not fully mature ones) - we think that mum went into the garden and ate something undesirable and then came back in and vomited it up for the pups.  The panacur did not do any harm, all pups are weighed before being dosed.

Our breed has to be wormed rather frequently as they tend to eat other animals' faeces when out (they have rather revolting habits)including sheep droppings, fox excrement, you name it they eat it before you can turn round!!

Use Drontal and never see any worms.  I remember in the old days with the old worming methods you used to see them!

I bought a puppy from a good breeder in 2008, couple of days after she was home with us i noticed she was having worms in her poo. Huge amounts, the breeder gave me sheets saying she had been wormed 2, 5 and 8 weeks but i very much doubt it now. That was the first time i saw worms.
