Help I need advice pls!!
I have a three year old castrated male Westie whom I've had since a puppy, until April he lived quite happily with my Grandad Westie until he died of old age.
Anyway I've since bought a female Scottish Terrier and shes been with me for 3 weeks me but the behaviour of the 2 together causes me concern at times.
Its the first time I've had 2 young dogs together and they do get on very well, and love chasing, rough and tumble, and tuggy toys, however at times their behaviour can be too much and they will start pulling each other round. I am a bit worried as Hamish the Westie is so much bigger than my Scottie!! This is not aggressive fighting its nipping each other and being rough, believe me I know what fighting dogs are!!! If I step in its ok but they will then start again immediately my back is turned, I do give them bones, kongs etc to distract them.
My Mum separated them at the weekend and she got bit by Hamish who just wanted to carry on play fighting however all the time is not acceptable!!!
Help!! What can I do?? Is this normal?? As I'm writing this things are calm, Hamsish is asleep Scottie chewing a bone!! So its not always a madhouse!!
Any help and advice would really be appreciated!!
Thanks

Perfectly normal, it is how dogs like to interact, especially puppies :D

Of course it is up to you to call time out when you have had enough or things get too heated.

Or if the pup is getting too tired.

I am sure the novelty for Hamish will wear off too, and at some point he will tell her to leave off too, for now he thinks a Young playmate so much fun.

Sounds like perfectly normal terrier play - pups especially love rough play :-D

It is your job to decide when they stop and to separate them if necessary to ensure the pup gets enough rest - a tired pup will play harder and bite more, just like a tired child ;-)  Your older dog should also have somewhere to retire to so he can get away from pup when he's had enough or just wants some peace ;-)

I've always found that young pups get plenty of rest when given their meal after play sessions, it's easier to sleep on a nice full tum ;-)
It's not what you say, it's what you DO that counts...

Hi westielover2, I have two young boys who now seem unexpectedly mature and sensible next to a young puppy that loves to 'teach them a lesson' by chasing, nipping and generally showing them he deserves his very own Asbo. It never lasts long because the troublemaker gets to cool off in the crate. Now that he is 6 months at least he can get some time off-lead to practice his recall, and this seems to tire him out better than all the racing about. Perhaps make time to work and play with them separately, if you aren't already doing this?
OK, so the cream carpets were a bad idea
