Hi , a friend of mine is looking for a jackhuaua puppy ( sorry if spelt wrong )
Does anyone know about this cross breed ?

Sorry it is impossible to say anything about a cross like this as there is no way of knowing what it will turn out like, could be any size between its parent types/breeds assuming that either parent is typical of their breed/type.
You could end up with a puppy with very strong hunting instincts that is sharp like a terrier or delicate and have toy breed tendencies.
I cannot imagine a person drawn to a terrier type temperament and character also being fan of such a diminutive toy breed with a completely different purpose and character, so which kind of owner are these crosses designed to appeal to????

Thanks for your reply, a friend of mine has a daughter who is 18 and she likes the idea of this cross breed , i said she should re think as she will not really know what she will end up with . maybe a fashion type ?

Then she should get a toy breed that appeals and not put a terrier into the mix, far too bright and independent for someone who wants a lap dog.

Thankfully the mother asked me to put up a post to ask about this , so at least i can tell her exactly what she should hear .
Apparently they have seen some advertised for £300 ( crazy )
I have always got my dogs from good breeders so really do not understand the new trend ??

To be honest if they want a one off the dogs home is the place to go, if none of the 200 available breeds appeal.

One question i would put to the potential owner is ask how they would feel about having just a JRT or just a Chi.. If there are points that they dislike about either breed then there is their answer about getting or not getting one.
If they feel the need for a cross like this then i would be heading to the rescue centres, soo many JRT's and crosses of in the centres all over the UK.
I have a friend who paid almost double to price for a cross of the same, though they were told it was a pedigree Chi without papers

She felt sorry for the puppy so got it.. tut tut.. She finds her hard work on recall and very very stubborn at times(terrier instinct). She wouldn't out of choice have another like this and would go to a proper breeder for a 'real' Chi next time.
The Dogs Trust have their dogs available to see online and Battersea have many on theirs too to view.
Its like people who want a Lab x Poodle and then say that they don't like Poodles, its crazy as this dog will have Poodle genes and traits and you never know how much will come through as they get older..
I totally agree .. only one breed for me ( rough collie ) .
I will be passing on the comments and concerns to them and can only hope they take notice ..
I am grateful for the replies ..thankyou .

This is the hardest bit isn't it? You feel that they ask you because of your knowledge of dogs etc but then disregard your response if it's not what they want to hear. Exasperating!!
I was talking to someone the other day whose child regularly sticks her fingers in her ears singing "la, la, la" when confronted with something she doesn't want to hear. I imagine some adults haven't grown out of this either

Once they have arrived in a rescue facility there are some truly delightful dogs, that one would NEVER dream of deliberately crossing, or buying from a BYB. I still can't condone it when done deliberately but a rescue is the best place to go for a mongrel. The advantage for new dog owners is that, to some extent you can see what you are getting. Health issues are much harder to detect but if you have someone influenced by looks then at least the chance to see what the dog looks like, and to assess its size, is an advantage.
When we chose our mutt from Manchester Dogs Home he was the only chap in the place not barking. Wow! We thought, what an advantage. Turns out he just had a sore throat and kennel cough : ) Still, I wouldn't swap him for the world.

mmmmmmmmmm my nephew has one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its actually quite cute..... didn't bother lecturing him about getting it!!!
love me love the dogs
Yes that is the difficult bit ..
I laughed about yours being the quietest until home

My boy is far more gobbier than i have ever remembered my previous boys !!!
But would not be without him

that would be a mongrel mate. try the dogs home theres loads there needing good homes.
please think about this, jack russels can be a handful and they have very strong terrier instincts, also chi, are hunt dogs, i have spoke to a top judge and breeder about this cross and she advises strongly against it. As a terrier owner and ex-breeder of them i would be careful. Most people who breeds crosses are sometimes not all they seem. especially designer dogs!!
I met someone who bred this cross a while back. he thought it amusing that the dogs he got off his two produced beautiful fluffy pups that grew into not very attractive adults that he described as yappy snappy horrible things. he wasn't bothered though as he got £150 a pup every 6 months and once out of his door wasn't his problem. viewed it as easy money.
this is the biggest problem to the dog world, cross breeds (designer dogs). Even the new report didnt go far enough to stamp out this problem. why are us responsible pedigree dog breeders always getting the bad end of the deal, whenever they want to improve something. We will all do what they want, but will it stop someone like this person, no they will just dig further underground, and get away with it. Funny thing is most of these puppy farmers and designer dog breeders are actually licenced by the local authority! so automatically will be accepted onto the new schemes.

And they think they have something different. I went to PAH today, taking advantage of the special offers. While I waited at the checkout, the people in front were raving about their new puppy. A cockadoodle! It was a cocker spaniel cross poodle. As the poodle is so intelligent, and will actually work, would this be an ideal pet for an 18 month old baby? That's why they got the pup - a pet for baby!

saw some "dollies" advertised recently dallie x bc.

>dallie x bc.
That must be just about the most hellish combination ever!

Two extremely energetic and mentally demanding breeds - it doesn't bear thinking about.
A closed mouth gathers no feet

I think another bad combination is the greyhound x bc, a greyhound with a brain.. oh dear lord.. And anything crossed with an Akita i'll never comprehend.

local free ads had someone trying for about 2 months to shift some pups, shih tzu x poodle, my first thought was..........combine those two names........and you get ....................

Chris

Some fantastic ones in agility - first lot were accidentally produced. The sire was actually the dog who played Pongo in 101 dalmations, bitch a nice collie apparently. Dogs are awesome in agility! The next litter and I think the third were done deliberately, but only because the first litter were fantastic and a couple ended up with quite a few of them (common in agility to end up with lots of dogs!) and did very well with them. I suspect there'll all retired or fairly old now. Interesting to look at - big splodges and lots of spots - actually very attractive. Wouldn't normally advise it, but these were exceptions.
Agility is fun
> I think another bad combination is the greyhound x bc,
Ths is a very old cross the classic Lurcher.
Barbara and the Grey Curly Tails.

Barbara,
Thanks for that, you learn something new everyday..

Never ceases to amaze me how people seem to think mixing breeds is like mixing paint, stir long enough and you will get what you envisage, if only.
The other surprising thing is the using of a JRT they are not exactly a stable cross breed either so adding an another ingredient and the result may well be impossible and in this case almost defiantly feisty.

I have just had a litter from my Pedigree / KC registered / Health tested gundog bitch and the amount of people who asked me, when she was in pup, what breed dog I had mated her to was amazing..... I just don't get the whole cross / designer thing? My puppies have been bred for a purpose not to ponce about with some stupid made up name.... Arrggh it really annoys me!
You've obviously never owned a well bred Chihuahua with a true temperament

. I've owned all kinds of breeds in my life (large and medium-sized) and never ever have I come across a breed as intelligent, lively and eager to please as my Chihuahua! They definitely have a little terrier in them which shows in their overconfident personality and the ability to be "on the go" 24/7.

Having had both I can not think of anything more challenging.. Can you imagine the herding instinct of a BC mixed with Dallie stubborness. The BC need for a job and the Dalmatian demand for a decent wage!

Interesting!

I have never had Smooth Coats, so won't pass judgement. But I do have Long Coats, as well as Yorkshire Terriers, and when folk ask what a Chi is like, I always say similar to a terrier temperament. Active, full of themselves, and confident.
So it's quite nice to see that I'm not the only person that finds them terrier like. Except, they are much easier to housetrain than Yorkies!
The hurrier I go - the behinder I get!
Yes that is actually another thing I forgot to mention.

They are extremely clean.......... I got my male at 3,5 months old and he was already clean inside the house 99% of the time. Even when he's in the garden or having a walk outside he only does his business out of the way under some bushes and shrubs lol (a bit of a pain when you have to stretch underneath to pick up the poo

).
And as for the title of this post. I DO NOT agree with crossbreeding just because they MIGHT turn out cute.
***People might come and go, but dog will stay with you for life!***

Gosh if chi's are easier to housetrain remind me not to try Yorkies! My little Mia,has been a little devil as per my past posts. Yes she is crossbreed, pomxchi not that I deliberately went out looking for a cross was actually after a chi then saw an advert for her and fell in love not the most sensible way to go about things and not my usual style fortunately this gamble has worked out great and I wouldn't be without her, .
but even with a very cute little cross I dont agree with crossbreeding just because it might be nice or whatever or the latest fashion fad.
Plenty of good pedigree dogs about that would suit everyone or maybe a straightforward mongrel
Forgot the on the go 24/7, Mia has two speeds stop and tickle my tummy or wizzing around

yeh my older chi is now 1 and a half and and he still has accidents, basically he just doesnt like going out in the cold, but got to say my 11 weeks old puppy is completely clean already, goes out everytime and hasnt had an accident for about 4 or 5 days! i am impressed lol
oh and around the subject of jackauhau's i know a local farmer that breeds them as littte ratting dogs n they arnt half lively down them holes, they have all the character and aggression of a jrt but have big ears and are about half the size of a standard jack, i wouldnt have one as a pet but his definatly do what he wanted them to do lol
proud owner to, BUSTER staffy, BANDIT an SAPPHIRE chis, TESS lab and beardie, cats n rabbits gpigs!
