Hi , i have told a friend i would ask on here about the pro's and con's of this injection ...Do most people find that it is effective ? Or has anyone had to have their bitch emergency spayed because of it , or found their bitch to be still in whelp ?...
My friend had her young cocker go through this and she had a terrible time , Her bitch nearly died and was touch and go for a day or two, emergency spay and then infection after the spay and a hefty vets bill to boot .. She think's it is something to do with the injection , i think it is more to do with the dog ... (i kind of feel guilty too as i mentioned the injection to her )

I know a Border Collie breeder who had the injection when her bitch mated too young.

She went on to need a C-section.  Only one large pup - and it had spina bifida.

My friends dog was only 7 months old .. She was upset and i told her to ask her vet about the injection .. she did and went ahead with it and had a terrible time .. She wishes she had just let her be and have the pup's, if any ...
Think i have really asked as i feel awful ... i did not realise there were risk's with the injection , i just thought it was kind of like the morning after pill ...

You are not the only person to recommend the jab.  Lots of CD'ers advise people to get the jab when a bitch is mismated.

I only feel strongly against it because I have only had the one experience of it, and it produced a deformed pup.  Many will say they had no problems with it.

I used it many years ago when my young bitch was caught. I had no problems afterwards, except that she had 10months between seasons for the rest of her life, if you could call that a problem ;-)

I have heard of problems, but could it just be that people talk about problems, but not when things go smoothly?

Edited to sort out problems with the letter 'g' not wanting to work -:-(

I've used it once. My young bitch went upstairs and let the boys out of their room (where they'd been put because she was in season) and got herself mated at 12 months. I had the mismate jab. She got pyometra and had to be spayed :-(

Friends used it when they had a mishap. Bitch went on to have one large pup - needed a ceasar I think.

We've used it once.   I was ill and OH didn't think and popped Freya in with Thor whilst he took Beau out ......came back to them tied nicely eek

Immediately phoned the vet - they didn't keep the drug onsite but got fresh in and the following day Freya had the injection followed by the 2nd 48 hours later (and then Thor had the snip - talk about shutting the door when the horse has bolted :d).

That was 4 years ago.   We were lucky - no pregnany and no bad after-effects.   But the vet did warn us that there could be.
Treat every stressful situation as a dog would. Pee on it and walk away

Which one? As far as I know there are two - one which has to be given within 48 hours of the mating, and another which can be given up to 45 days after the mating. If it's the second then I know of one bitch who's had this on two consecutive seasons and been fine, with no pregnancy. If only the owners would spay her, because she's congenitally deaf and should never have puppies ....

No side effects here either except my bitch went on to have a very heavy moult!
3 litters of Munsters = 3 Sh.Ch's & 3 RCC winners! Not bad eh?

With the older drug used Estradiol Cypionate (ECP)http://www.vetmed.lsu.edu/eiltslotus/theriogenology-5361/cannine%20pregnancy%20prevention_3.htm , I believe Delvosteron is the one used to stop seasons it is not unknown for a bitch to go on to have, usually a singleton puppy.  It tends to extend the season so disrupting the ovulation.  It is also not unusual because of the high levels of female hormones for bitches to go on to have Pyometra.

Alizin http://www.virbac.co.nz/content/technicalfiles/Alizin.pdf is a prostaglandin injection, more reliable and most effective later than the earlier drug, this works on the basis of causing contractions so emptying the womb.  It can cause abdominal discomfort.

My friend's bitch had the injection after unplanned mating, but still went on to have two pups.  All were fine, mum and pups.

I had half brother and sister get to each other and had the mis mate jab done but can't remember which one as my Vet advised that one could cause problems. She was mated on her next season (6 months) and has just recently produced a litter of 8 pups all thriving.
The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue.

I know of someone who used the mismate jab (sorry don't know which one) a few years back. It resulted in ONE very deformed pup that had to be PTS.

No experience myself but I do know somweone who has used the 48 hour one successfully. No pups, all fine except that it did prolong the bitches season by about 2 weeks, which dragged the whole thing out for about 5 weeks all in all.

My girl had the misalliance injections when she was accidentally mated on day 21 of her season, aged just 19 months. She went on to have 2 puppies by c-section, and was spayed at the same time.

It does seem to depend on which drug was used.

I know of someone who used mismate and she aborted some of the litter then went on the deliver two dead puppies at full term.  the bitch was so stressed that she had to have calmers.  I do know however when it has been used successfully with no side effects.  I think it all depends on how early its used and maybe even how big the litter was.  There are a lot of feelings on here about early matings, accidental, ect but sometimes i do think we tend to forget that we are talking about animals here who if left to become a pack (such as in horders situations) bitches and dogs do what comes naturally regardless of age, or how many seasons, whether they are related ect.  Mismate is not something I would ever consider, but that is just my opinion.  others are more than entitled to have their own.
